Big Ten Announces 2025 Men's Golf Preseason Honorees

ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday preseason honors for 54 student-athletes who were included on the Big Ten Men’s Golfers to Watch List.

The Watch List is headlined by 12 student-athletes who earned All-Big Ten distinction last year, including the 2025 Freshman of the Year Baylor Larrabee of UCLA. It also includes 11 golfers who finished inside the Top-15 at the 2025 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships, led by Maryland’s Emil Riegger and Michigan State’s Lorenzo Pinili who tied for fifth place, and 17 who received Academic All-Big Ten honors last season.

This spring, the Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships (May 1-3) will unfold at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore., while the 2026 NCAA Golf Championships will be hosted for a third consecutive year at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

Big Ten Conference Recognizes 111th Medal of Honor Class

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference is celebrating its 111th class of recipients who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor from their respective institutions during the 2024-25 academic year. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference’s most prestigious award. It was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics.

The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career. This year’s class comprised student-athletes from 15 sports.

Big Ten schools currently feature more than 11,000 student-athletes, but only 36 earn the award on an annual basis. Since the Big Ten Medal of Honor was first presented more than a century ago, just over 1,680 student-athletes have earned this unique distinction. Those names are on permanent display at the Big Ten Office in Rosemont.

New Era Begins As House Settlement Approved

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 6, 2025 – Today marks a historic milestone for college athletics in the United States. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has granted final approval to a settlement in the House v. NCAA (“House”) litigation. This landmark settlement – agreed to by plaintiffs representing nearly 400,000 current and former student-athletes and the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference (SEC) – will reshape the landscape of college sports, paving the way for a model that prioritizes fairness, stability, integrity and opportunity for student-athletes and institutions.

Overseeing this model will be the newly established College Sports Commission – an independent body that will be responsible for implementing the settlement terms governing revenue sharing, student-athlete Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and roster limits. The Commission will investigate any potential violations of these rules, make determinations regarding potential rules violations and penalties, provide notice and opportunity to be heard, participate in the arbitration process and ultimately administer penalties for violations of these rules. The Commission’s leadership team will be announced in the near future.

Under the new system, student-athletes will have more opportunities to financially benefit during their participation in intercollegiate athletics than ever before. Institutions are now able to share revenue directly with student-athletes, in addition to providing existing benefits such as athletic scholarships, access to world-class training facilities, academic counseling, medical care, post-eligibility medical coverage, mental health resources, nutritional guidance and life skills development.

Beginning July 1, 2025, each year, participating schools can distribute up to 22% of the average revenue among schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC from media rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships – known as the revenue sharing cap. The cap is estimated at $20.5 million per school for the 2025-26 academic year, pending final confirmation. To ensure revenue sharing with student-athletes is appropriately managed and reported to the Court for compliance, athletics departments will use the new College Athlete Payment System (CAPS) platform developed by LBi Software.

Student-athletes will also be able to continue receiving compensation from third-parties other than their institutions for the use of their NIL, so long as their NIL deals are made with the purpose of using their NIL for a valid business purpose and do not exceed a reasonable range of compensation. On behalf of the College Sports Commission, Deloitte* has built and will maintain a new technology platform called NIL Go in which student-athletes will be required to report their NIL deals to confirm they are in compliance with the rules. Deals will be evaluated based on:

Payor association – The relationship between the payor and the student-athlete’s school.
Valid business purpose – Whether the payor is seeking the use of the student-athlete’s NIL for a valid business purpose, meaning to sell a good or service to the public for profit.
Range of compensation – Whether the compensation paid to the student-athlete is commensurate with compensation paid to similarly situated individuals.

Finally, for participating schools, NCAA scholarship limits have been removed and roster limits have been established for each sport, allowing for a significant increase in scholarship opportunities for student-athletes. Under this new model, schools will have the option to offer partial or full scholarships to every student-athlete on a team’s roster, as long as the total number of student-athletes stays within the sport’s specific roster limit. Efforts have also been made to ensure current and immediately incoming student-athletes are not adversely impacted by the establishing of roster limits. Removing scholarship limits allows schools to better support their student-athletes through new scholarships, particularly in non-revenue-generating sports.

“We look forward to implementing this historic settlement designed to bring stability, integrity and competitive balance to college athletics while increasing both scholarship and revenue opportunities for student-athletes in all sports,” said Tony Petitti, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference.

“This is a significant moment for college athletics that will provide unparalleled opportunities for student-athletes. We look forward to implementing this new system which offers much-needed transparency and structure to create a more sustainable model for the long-term future of college athletics,” said Jim Phillips, Ph.D., Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“As we enter this new era of college athletics, it is crucial we do so with structure, transparency, and the success of student-athletes in mind — this settlement and new model will ensure that happens. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to implement this new system that prioritizes fairness and opportunity for all student-athletes and institutions," said Brett Yormark, Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.

"It's a new day in collegiate athletics. This historic moment allows us to maintain what makes college sports special, the development of young individuals through sport, while also evolving to meet today's student-athletes where they are with new opportunities in a manner that provides long-term stability for collegiate athletics. I am proud to work alongside my colleagues as we implement and introduce the future of college sports,” said Teresa Gould, Commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference.

“The approval of the House settlement agreement represents a significant milestone for the meaningful support of our student-athletes and a pivotal step toward establishing long-term sustainability for college sports, two of the Southeastern Conference’s top priorities. As the journey to modernize collegiate sports continues, we remain focused on identifying and implementing innovative opportunities for our student-athletes across all sports while maintaining the core values that make collegiate athletics uniquely meaningful,” said Greg Sankey, Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.

Following are significant dates related to the implementation of the settlement:

June 6, 2025: Settlement approved; settlement-related NCAA rules are effective, as adopted by the NCAA Division 1 Board on April 21, 2025.
June 11 2025: NIL Go portal launches.
June 15, 2025: Opt-in deadline for non-defendant schools to fully commit to revenue sharing.
July 6, 2025: Opt-in schools must “designate” student-athletes permitted by the settlement to remain above roster limits.
July 1, 2025: First date for direct institutional revenue sharing payments to student-athletes.
Start of 2025-26 academic year: With the exception of the “designated” student-athletes, Fall sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition.
December 1, 2025: With the exception of “designated” student-athletes, Winter and Spring sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition or Dec. 1, whichever is earlier.

Big Ten Announces Men’s Golf All-Conference Teams and Individual Award Winners

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced the men’s golf all-conference teams and individual award winners on Thursday, as voted on by the conference coaches following the 2025 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships. UCLA’s Pablo Ereño was named the unanimous Big Ten Golfer of the Year, while teammate Baylor Larrabee was tabbed Freshman of the Year and Bruins mentor Armen Kirakossian claimed Coach of the Year honors.

Ereño finished among the top 10 in eight of 11 tournaments this season. The Madrid, Spain, native helped the UCLA men's golf team win the 2025 Big Ten Championships last weekend, carding a two-under 68 on the final day of competition to help the Bruins secure their first conference title since 2006. Ereño was honored with the Big Ten Conference's Les Bolstad Award, given to the conference player each season with the lowest stroke average (69.78) during the 2024-25 season. Ereño's scoring average of 69.78 currently ranks first on UCLA's single-season record list (with a minimum of 20 rounds to qualify).

Larrabee was voted the Freshman of the Year after carding five top-25 finishes during the 2024-25 campaign. The Ferndale, Wash., native capped his debut season helping the Bruins claim the Big Ten Championship in their inaugural season, posting a first-round 69 (-1). The newcomer contributed counting scores in 22 of 27 rounds this season with a 71.0 counters scoring average, highlighted by six rounds in the 60s.

Kirakossian led the Bruins to top-seven finishes in 10 tournaments this season. UCLA won the Preserve Golf Club Collegiate (Oct. 28-29) and The Goodwin (March 27-29) before capturing its first Big Ten Championship on April 27. UCLA capped the 2025 season with a 278.5 scoring average and a No. 13 national ranking.

The All-Big Ten First Team features Illinois’ Jackson Buchanan, Max Herendeen and Ryan Voois, Michigan’s Hunter Thomson, Northwestern’s Cameron Adam and Daniel Svärd, Oregon’s Greyson Leach, Purdue’s Sam Easterbrook, and UCLA’s Omar Morales and Ereño, with Buchanan, Herendeen, Thomson, Svärd, Leach, Easterbrook, Ereño and Morales all earning unanimous first-team nods.

An additional 10 golfers were named to the All-Big Ten Second Team. New to this year’s postseason honors is the addition of a five-person all-freshman team, with four programs garnering recognition.

The Big Ten also recognized 18 Sportsmanship Award honorees. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Field Announced

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Seven Big Ten teams and a trio of individuals were selected to compete in the 2025 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals, as announced on the NCAA Selection Show Wednesday. The regional field is divided among six sites and will be held from May 12-14.

Big Ten Champion UCLA earned the No. 3 seed in the Auburn Regional and will compete at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Alabama, along with No. 6 Oregon and No. 7 Purdue.

No. 3 Illinois will begin the postseason as the host of the Urbana Regional at Atkins Golf Club, while No. 6 Northwestern, No. 9 USC and No. 10 Michigan State compete at Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida.

Indiana’s Clay Merchant (Urbana), Maryland’s Emil Riegger (Amherst) and Michigan’s Hunter Thomson (Urbana) each earned a berth to compete as individuals in next week’s regionals.

Thirteen teams and 10 individuals (not on those teams) will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals (not on those teams). The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals. UCLA Men’s Golf Wins First Big Ten Championship

LUTHERVILLE, Md. – The University of California Los Angeles men’s golf team won its first Big Ten Conference title after posting a three-round score of 842 (+2) at the 2025 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships, which took place at Baltimore Country Club. The Bruins also earned the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.

UCLA was followed by Illinois (843), Michigan State (854), Oregon (855) and Ohio State in fifth with a team score of 857.

Bruins’ Omar Morales captured medalist honors with a three-round total of 203 (-7). Oregon’s Greyson Leach was second at four-under par 206, while Illinois’ Jake Birdwell and Maryland's Yang Kuang tied for third place with three-under par 207. Maryland’s Emil Riegger and Michigan State’s Lorenzo Pinili each carded a 209 (-1) to share fifth place. All six players earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Championships Team.

UCLA’s Pablo Ereño was recognized with the Big Ten’s Les Bolstad Award, given to the conference player with the lowest stroke average (69.78) during the 2024-25 season. Ereno is the first Bruin to win the award.

The selection show for the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship will air on Golf Channel on Wednesday, April 30 at 1 p.m. ET. Regionals will take place at six sites from May 12-14 and the national championships will be held May 23-28 in Carlsbad, Calif. at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.

The Big Ten Conference Announces Inaugural “Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award” for Student-Athletes

ROSEMONT, Ill – In honor of Jackie Robinson’s core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence, the Big Ten Conference today announced the inaugural Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award to recognize the conference’s student-athletes who have made an exceptional impact in their local community. Before breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier, Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball.

Student-athletes will be nominated based on the following criteria:

Demonstrated Impact: Significant and tangible contributions to community projects or causes, including measurable outcomes or positive changes resulting from their involvement.

Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with others, including peers, organizations, and community members, to achieve common goals and enhance community impact.

Consistency and Commitment: Ongoing and consistent participation in community service activities over an extended period of time.

Visibility and Advocacy: Efforts to raise awareness and advocate for important groups or causes, leveraging their platform to promote positive change and engage others.

"Our student-athletes make significant contributions through competition, academics, and community impact,” said Big Ten Senior Vice President, Community & Impact, Omar Brown. “This award allows the Big Ten to recognize these efforts in improving communities, just as we do with their other achievements. Jackie Robinson embodies this award and our goal to honor student-athletes who positively impact others."

Each Big Ten member-institution can nominate two student-athletes, one male and one female, from their respective schools. The Big Ten Conference will select two Jackie Robinson Community & Impact award winners, from the 36 nominations, who will be announced by the Big Ten Conference this spring. All remaining nominees will be recognized with individual awards for their contributions to their local communities.

The Big Ten Conference’s commitment to athletics, academics and service goes back to the conference’s founding. Coupling the academic goals set forth by leaders of the charter members of the conference with their steadfast commitment to athletics, the conference instituted the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1915, the first award to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on intercollegiate athletics. It is awarded annually by each member institution to one male and one female student of the graduating class who has attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship and athletics.

In June of 2020 the conference launched the Big Ten Equality Coalition. This group, which features student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, chancellors, presidents and other members, has a stated goal of seeking tangible ways to actively and constructively combat racism and hate around the world, while also empowering student-athletes to express their rights to free speech and peaceful protest. An important initiative resulting from conversations initiated by the coalition was the Big Ten Voter Registration Initiative.

In recent years, several delegations of conference student-athletes and administrators have traveled to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, for an immersive civil rights educational experience entitled: “Big Life Series: Selma to Montgomery.” The visit to one of the key centers of the civil rights movement was highlighted by marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to learn more about the profound impact that young people had on the civil rights movement.

Additionally, the Big Ten Conference is dedicated to making a lasting impact on the communities where its major events are held hosting sports clinics, renovating recreation centers, and giving elementary-aged children a behind-the-scenes experience with major Big Ten events. In all cases the conference focuses on creating meaningful improvements aimed at leaving each location better than it was found. Most recently, the Big Ten collaborated with the College Football Playoff Foundation, local sports organizations and local school districts to enhance spaces for teachers and children while providing additional educational and athletic opportunities for children.

As Jackie Robison famously said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."

ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference announced Thursday preseason honors for 49 student-athletes who were included on the Big Ten Men’s Golfers to Watch List.

The Watch List is headlined by nine student-athletes who earned All-Big Ten distinction last year, including reigning Golfer of the Year, Jackson Buchanan (Illinois), and 2024 Freshman of the Year, Max Herendeen (Illinois). It also includes six golfers who finished inside the Top-10 at the 2024 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships, led by medalist Daniel Svärd (Northwestern), and 19 who received Academic All-Big Ten honors last season.

The 2024-25 golf season tees off this week for the expanded Big Ten, as the conference welcomed Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington on August 2. Four Big Ten squads were ranked in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll (No. 9 Illinois, No. 18 Washington, No. 22 Ohio State, No. 25 UCLA).

This spring, the Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships (April 18-20) will unfold at Baltimore Country Club in Maryland, while the 2025 NCAA Golf Championships will be hosted for a second consecutive year at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference today officially admitted the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington, bringing the total number of member institutions to 18. Competition will begin this season for all conference sports.

“We are excited today to officially welcome the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington to the Big Ten Conference,” said Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “All four institutions feature a combination of world class academics and athletics that are a great fit for our conference, and we look forward to building long-lasting relationships with the administrators, coaches, student-athletes, alumni and fans.”

On June 30, 2022, the Big Ten’s Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) voted unanimously to admit the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC). A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.

Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. Today, they also become members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where Big Ten institutions lead the nation with more than 75,000 instructional staff, 810,000 students, $17.4 billion in annual research expenditures, and 145 million library volumes, representing 25 percent of all print titles in North America. Collaboration through the Big Ten Academic Alliance allows the universities to work more effectively and efficiently by, among other things, sharing a high-speed fiber optic network, offering an array of leadership development programs, building shared infrastructure, and seamlessly sharing library resources.

Athletically, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington have won a combined 302 NCAA team championships and have 49 Olympians on Team USA at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. On the football field, they’ve combined for 10 Heisman Trophies, 73 College Football Hall of Famers, 41 Rose Bowl championships and 173 First Round NFL draft picks, including six this year.

The University of Oregon is a Carnegie R1 research university and a member of the Association of American Universities. The Oregon faculty includes a Nobel Prize winner, a MacArthur fellow, a pair of National Medal of Science winners and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. Oregon has more than 500 student-athletes competing in 20 sports and have taken home 38 national championships, including men’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, acrobatics and tumbling.

University of Southern California (USC) is a prestigious private research university offering more than 350-degree programs excelling in education, the arts, business, engineering and sciences, as well as in research innovation and healthcare. Sponsoring 23 sports, USC has a long tradition of successful Olympic athletes, boasting more Olympians, medalists and gold medalists than any school in the country. Entering 2024-25, the Trojan teams have won 113 national championships.

The University of Washington has been recognized as the No. 1 most innovative public university in the world and recently tied for seventh on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities rankings and second among U.S. public institutions. Washington receives more federal research dollars than any other U.S. public university and has been home to seven Nobel Prize winners. In athletics, the Huskies 650 student-athletes compete in 22 sports and have won national championships in football, women’s cross country, men’s rowing, women’s rowing, softball, women’s volleyball and women’s golf. ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference is celebrating its 110th class of recipients who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor from their respective institutions during the 2023-24 academic year. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference’s most prestigious award. It was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics.

The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career. This year’s class comprised student-athletes from 17 sports.

Big Ten schools currently feature more than 9,800 student-athletes, but only 28 earn the award on an annual basis. Since the Big Ten Medal of Honor was first presented more than a century ago, just over 1,650 student-athletes have earned this unique distinction. Those names are on display at the Big Ten Office in Rosemont.

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that 1,695 students on varsity rosters have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes students from all 14 institutions plus Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame and 38 different sports who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.

The 2023-24 class of Distinguished Scholar Award recipients includes 386 students who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the previous academic term.

Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must have earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – On Tuesday, the Big Ten Conference announced the 28 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2023-24 academic year. These standouts were chosen from a group of 350 students honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Full 2024 Spring Academic All-Big Ten List

ROSEMONT, Ill. [June 12, 2024] — The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 2,271 students competing in spring sports who have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten team Wednesday.

The list of honorees includes 174 baseball students, 80 men’s golf students, 72 women’s golf students, 181 men’s lacrosse students, 183 women’s lacrosse students, 310 women’s rowing students, 189 softball students, 56 men’s tennis students, 76 women’s tennis students, 291 men’s track and field students, 382 women’s track and field students, five bowling students, 74 fencing students, four pistol students, 17 rifle students, 18 women’s lightweight rowing students, 27 men’s rowing students, eight women’s synchronized swimming students, 18 men’s volleyball students, 57 women’s hockey students, 11 sand volleyball students, 31 women’s water polo students and seven women’s wrestling students.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team (as verified by being on the official squad list as of May 1 for spring sports), have been enrolled full time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Six Big Ten Programs Selected for NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Field

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Six Big Ten teams and a trio of individuals were selected to compete in the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals, as announced on the NCAA Selection Show Wednesday. The regional field is divided among six sites and will be held May 13-15.

Big Ten Champion Northwestern earned the No. 5 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional and will compete at the Finley Golf Club, along with No. 11 Michigan State.

No. 5 Purdue will play host to 12 programs, including No. 8 Indiana, in the West Lafayette Regional at the Kampen-Cosler Course. Big Ten student-athletes Hunter Thomson (Michigan) and Cameron Huss (Wisconsin) will each compete as individuals in West Lafayette.

No. 3 Illinois is headed to the West Coast for the Stanford Regional at Stanford Golf Course, where Minnesota’s Ben Warian will also compete as an individual. No. 6 Ohio State rounds out the conference’s selections and will take part in the Baton Rouge Regional at the University Club.

Regionals will consist of 81 teams and 45 individuals competing at one of the six 54-hole sites. The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.

Big Ten Announces Men’s Golf Postseason Awards

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten The Big Ten Conference announced the men’s golf All-Conference teams and individual award winners on Tuesday, as voted on by the conference coaches following the 2024 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships. Purdue’s Herman Sekne and Illinois’ Jackson Buchanan were selected as the Big Ten Co-Golfers of the Year, Illinois’ Max Herendeen was named the unanimous Freshman of the Year and Northwestern’s David Inglis earned unanimous Coach of the Year honors.

Sekne placed among the top five in five of nine tournaments this season, including a first-place finish at the Windon Memorial Classic. A native of Oslo, Norway, he capped his season tied for fifth at the Big Ten Championships and earned a spot on the All-Championships Team. Sekne was also recognized with the Big Ten’s Les Bolstad Award, given to the conference player with the lowest stroke average during the 2023-24 season. The three-time All-Big Ten First Team selection is just the second Boilermaker to be named Golfer of the Year, joining Lee Williamson (2002).

Buchanan secured placements in the top eight of eight tournaments, including medalist laurels at the Duck Invitational and Purdue Fall Invitational. He concluded his junior campaign with a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, which earned him a spot on the All-Championships Team. A two-time All-Big Ten First Team honoree, Buchanan earned the 15th Golfer of the Year selection and fourth straight for Illinois.

Herendeen was voted the unanimous freshman of the year after carding 10 top-20 finishes during the 2023-24 campaign. The Bellevue, Wash., native opened his collegiate career by earning medalist honors at the 2023 Sahalee Players Championship and helped the Illini to a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships. Herendeen is the eighth rookie to take home the honor for Illinois and first since Jerry Ji (2020).

Inglis, a unanimous pick, earned his first coach of the year recognition after leading the Wildcats to five top-3 finishes over the course of the season, culminating in winning Northwestern’s first Big Ten Championship since 2006. He had four top-10 finishers at the championships and coached Daniel Svärd to his second straight individual title. Northwestern wrapped up the 2023-24 season with a 280.8 scoring average and a No. 28 national ranking. Inglis is the third Wildcat head coach and first in over 20 years to receive the distinction, joining Jeff Mory (1994) and Pat Goss (1997-99-00-01).

The All-Big Ten First Team features Illinois’ Jackson Buchanan and Herendeen, Michigan’s Hunter Thomson, Northwestern’s Daniel Svärd and Ethan Tseng, Ohio State’s Neal Shipley, Purdue’s Sekne and Wisconsin’s Cameron Huss. Buchanan, Herendeen, Svärd, Shipley, Sekne and Huss were unanimously selected.

Earning All-Big Ten Second Team laurels were Illinois’ Ryan Voois, Indiana’s Drew Salyers, Michigan State’s Ashton McCulloch, Minnesota’s Ben Warian, Northwestern’s Cameron Adam and James Imai, Ohio State’s Maxwell Moldovan and Purdue’s Nels Surtani.

The Big Ten also recognized 14 Sportsmanship Award recipients, honoring golfers who distinguished themselves through sportsmanship, ethical behavior, academics and citizenship.

Northwestern Wins Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the first time in 10 years, the Big Ten Conference has a new champion. After two close days, Northwestern pulled away on Sunday to capture the 2024 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships title, presented by Old National Bank. The Wildcats claimed their ninth Big Ten crown, the first since 2006, and received the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.

It was a sunny day with temperatures reaching the low 80s that played to Northwestern’s favor as the team concluded the championships with a total of 863 (+23), beating out Illinois (878) by 15 shots and Purdue (886) by 23 strokes.

Northwestern’s Daniel Svärd won medalist honors for the second year in a row with a three-day total of 211 (+1). Illinois’ Jackson Buchanan was second at two-over par 212, while Northwestern’s James Imai and Michigan State's Ashton McCulloch tied for third place with five-over par 215. Purdue’s Herman Sekne, Ohio State’s Neal Shipley and Michigan State’s August Meekhof each carded 217 (+7) to share fifth place. All seven players earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Championships Team.

Purdue’s Sekne was recognized with the Big Ten’s Les Bolstad Award, given to the conference player with the lowest stroke average (70.269) during the 2023-24 season. Skene is the third Boilermaker to win the award, joining Lee Williamson (2002) and Pariya Junhasavasdikul (2007).

Designed as the first 18-hole golf course in central Ohio by renowned Scottish-born architect Donald Ross, Scioto Country Club later became the place where golf’s greatest player, Jack Nicklaus, learned the game. With the opening of the golf course in 1916, the Club quickly gained national stature as a pre-eminent facility and a decade later hosted the 1926 U.S. Open Championship won by golfing legend Bobby Jones. This started the rich tournament tradition that Scioto enjoys as one of only five golf courses in the United States to have hosted five different major championships.

The selection show for the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship will air on Golf Channel on Wednesday, May 1 at 2 p.m. ET. Regionals will take place at six sites from May 13-15 and the national championships will be held May 24-29 in Carlsbad, Calif. at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.

The Story of Scioto Country Club

Designed as the first 18-hole golf course in central Ohio by renowned Scottish-born architect Donald Ross, it later became the Club where golf’s greatest player, Jack Nicklaus, learned the game. With the opening of the golf course in 1916, the Club quickly gained national stature as a pre-eminent facility and a decade later hosted the 1926 U.S. Open Championship won by golfing legend Bobby Jones. This started the rich tournament tradition that Scioto enjoys as one of only five golf courses in the United States to have hosted five different major championships. The 1931 Ryder Cup, the 1950 PGA Championship, the 1968 U.S. Amateur, and the 1986 Senior U.S. Open each added to the tournament legacy and prestige of the Club. During its Centennial year in 2016, the Club again hosted the U.S. Senior Open marking its sixth major championship held at Scioto. Scioto provided the connection between the two greatest names in golf in the 20th Century, that of Jones and Nicklaus. The golf course has been acclaimed around the world as a strategic routing and a course that demands precise shot-making. In its history, the Club boasts four golf professionals (Club professionals George Sargent, Jack Grout, and Walker Inman, Jr. and legendary Jack Nicklaus) that are in the PGA Hall of Fame. Top amateur players, both male and female, honed their skills under the tutelage of these great professionals. The golf course, recently renovated in 2021 by Andrew Green, used the 1926 "Dodo Bird" drawing to restore the original Donald Ross course that hosted the 1926 National Open and the 1931 Ryder Cup. Fairway widths were widened to original size, Ross designed features such as hummocks and flat bottom bunkers were again restored to showcase the original design while built for the modern player. Features that were removed in previous renovations, were restored and the greens were rebuilt in the style that represented the era when the course first opened over 100 years ago. Today, the course provides a great test to the finest players in the world, ready to host major championships, and yet is one that is most enjoyable for all levels of players. The USGA will return to Scioto for the 2026 U.S. Senior Open and the 2036 U.S. Amateur Championship.

1928 Big Ten Championships
Scioto hosted this prestigious event in 1928. The Club’s second Head Golf Professional, George Sargent, also coached the Ohio State Men’s Golf Team to victory during the event on his home turf. All the while his son, Albert Sargent, earned second place individual score for the Buckeyes. After 96 years, Scioto is honored to host the Men’s Big Ten Championship again on the very same stage.
