Big Ten Conference Announces 2025-26 Hockey Schedule

ROSEMONT, lll. — The Big Ten Conference released its 2025-26 hockey schedule on Friday, presenting dates and opponents for the 84-game conference season. The conference season begins October 30 and runs through March 6. The Big Ten’s seven schools will play 24 conference games in a double round-robin format, resulting in 12 games at home and 12 away.

The 2026 Big Ten Hockey Tournament will take place March 11-21 and feature a new format. The tournament will be shortened to two weeks and begin on Wednesday, March 11, with single-elimination quarterfinal games on campus sites. Teams seeded No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 will host the No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 seeds respectively. The No. 1 seed will gain a bye into the semifinals, slated for Saturday, March 14. The highest seeded team following the semifinals will host the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday, March 21.

Big Ten Hockey Tournament To Debut New Format in 2026

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Change is coming to the Big Ten Hockey Tournament, which will have a new format in March 2026.

The postseason tournament, which determines the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, will shift to a two-week, single-elimination format with all games played on campus.

The 2025-26 regular season concludes with games on Thursday and Friday, March 5-6. All seven teams will qualify for the Big Ten Tournament with quarterfinals being held on Wednesday, March 11. Teams seeded No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 will host the No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 seeds respectively. The No. 1 seed gains a bye into the semifinals.

Semifinals will take place on Saturday, March 14, hosted by the No. 1 seed and the highest advancing seed from the quarterfinals. The championship game will be held the weekend of March 20-21 and hosted by the highest remaining seed.

Michigan State defended its tournament title in 2025, recording a 4-3 double overtime victory over Ohio State in Munn Ice Arena.

Twenty-Four Big Ten Players Selected in 2025 NHL Draft

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Twenty-four players with connections to the Big Ten Conference were chosen in the 2025 Upper Deck NHL Draft, held June 27-28 at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. This year's draft class, which included selections from all seven schools, features current Big Ten players and future commitments.

Michigan landed seven selections (which tied a program record) while Minnesota had five picks and Penn State four draftees. Ohio State (3), Michigan State (2), Wisconsin (2) and Notre Dame (1) also had players chosen.

This year’s draft class is the largest in Big Ten Hockey history, surpassing the 21 selections that occurred in 2019 and 2022.

The first round, which was conducted Friday, saw four players chosen. Jackson Smith, who will be attending Penn State this fall, went 14th overall to Columbus. Wisconsin defenseman Logan Hensler was chosen 23rd by Ottawa, Michigan center Will Horcoff taken 24th by Pittsburgh, and incoming Michigan State forward Ryker Lee selected 26th by Nashville.

Since forming a hockey conference in 2013-14, the Big Ten has attracted 39 first-round selections, including eight top-five recipients.

New Era Begins As House Settlement Approved

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 6, 2025 – Today marks a historic milestone for college athletics in the United States. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has granted final approval to a settlement in the House v. NCAA (“House”) litigation. This landmark settlement – agreed to by plaintiffs representing nearly 400,000 current and former student-athletes and the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference (SEC) – will reshape the landscape of college sports, paving the way for a model that prioritizes fairness, stability, integrity and opportunity for student-athletes and institutions.

Overseeing this model will be the newly established College Sports Commission – an independent body that will be responsible for implementing the settlement terms governing revenue sharing, student-athlete Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and roster limits. The Commission will investigate any potential violations of these rules, make determinations regarding potential rules violations and penalties, provide notice and opportunity to be heard, participate in the arbitration process and ultimately administer penalties for violations of these rules. The Commission’s leadership team will be announced in the near future.

Under the new system, student-athletes will have more opportunities to financially benefit during their participation in intercollegiate athletics than ever before. Institutions are now able to share revenue directly with student-athletes, in addition to providing existing benefits such as athletic scholarships, access to world-class training facilities, academic counseling, medical care, post-eligibility medical coverage, mental health resources, nutritional guidance and life skills development.

Beginning July 1, 2025, each year, participating schools can distribute up to 22% of the average revenue among schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC from media rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships – known as the revenue sharing cap. The cap is estimated at $20.5 million per school for the 2025-26 academic year, pending final confirmation. To ensure revenue sharing with student-athletes is appropriately managed and reported to the Court for compliance, athletics departments will use the new College Athlete Payment System (CAPS) platform developed by LBi Software.

Student-athletes will also be able to continue receiving compensation from third-parties other than their institutions for the use of their NIL, so long as their NIL deals are made with the purpose of using their NIL for a valid business purpose and do not exceed a reasonable range of compensation. On behalf of the College Sports Commission, Deloitte* has built and will maintain a new technology platform called NIL Go in which student-athletes will be required to report their NIL deals to confirm they are in compliance with the rules. Deals will be evaluated based on:

Payor association – The relationship between the payor and the student-athlete’s school.
Valid business purpose – Whether the payor is seeking the use of the student-athlete’s NIL for a valid business purpose, meaning to sell a good or service to the public for profit.
Range of compensation – Whether the compensation paid to the student-athlete is commensurate with compensation paid to similarly situated individuals.

Finally, for participating schools, NCAA scholarship limits have been removed and roster limits have been established for each sport, allowing for a significant increase in scholarship opportunities for student-athletes. Under this new model, schools will have the option to offer partial or full scholarships to every student-athlete on a team’s roster, as long as the total number of student-athletes stays within the sport’s specific roster limit. Efforts have also been made to ensure current and immediately incoming student-athletes are not adversely impacted by the establishing of roster limits. Removing scholarship limits allows schools to better support their student-athletes through new scholarships, particularly in non-revenue-generating sports.

“We look forward to implementing this historic settlement designed to bring stability, integrity and competitive balance to college athletics while increasing both scholarship and revenue opportunities for student-athletes in all sports,” said Tony Petitti, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference.

“This is a significant moment for college athletics that will provide unparalleled opportunities for student-athletes. We look forward to implementing this new system which offers much-needed transparency and structure to create a more sustainable model for the long-term future of college athletics,” said Jim Phillips, Ph.D., Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“As we enter this new era of college athletics, it is crucial we do so with structure, transparency, and the success of student-athletes in mind — this settlement and new model will ensure that happens. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to implement this new system that prioritizes fairness and opportunity for all student-athletes and institutions," said Brett Yormark, Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.

This historic moment allows us to maintain what makes college sports special, the development of young individuals through sport, while also evolving to meet today's student-athletes where they are with new opportunities in a manner that provides long-term stability for collegiate athletics. As the journey to modernize collegiate sports continues, we remain focused on identifying and implementing innovative opportunities for our student-athletes across all sports while maintaining the core values that make collegiate athletics uniquely meaningful,” said Greg Sankey, Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.

Following are significant dates related to the implementation of the settlement:

June 6, 2025: Settlement approved; settlement-related NCAA rules are effective, as adopted by the NCAA Division 1 Board on April 21, 2025.
June 11 2025: NIL Go portal launches.
June 15, 2025: Opt-in deadline for non-defendant schools to fully commit to revenue sharing.
July 6, 2025: Opt-in schools must “designate” student-athletes permitted by the settlement to remain above roster limits.
July 1, 2025: First date for direct institutional revenue sharing payments to student-athletes.
Start of 2025-26 academic year: With the exception of the “designated” student-athletes, Fall sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition.
December 1, 2025: With the exception of “designated” student-athletes, Winter and Spring sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition or Dec. 1, whichever is earlier.

Big Ten Hockey Plays a Role in USA's Gold Medal at IIHF Men's World Championship

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Nine players and a coach with ties to Big Ten Hockey were members of the United States National Team that captured the gold medal at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship on May 25 in Stockholm, Sweden.

The victory marked the first time since 1933 Team USA had won a "stand alone" world championship and ranks among the U.S.'s most significant international triumphs alongside Olympic golds in 1980 and 1960 (which also counted as world titles) and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

• The 12th season of Big Ten Hockey concluded April 10 at the NCAA Frozen Four as Penn State fell to Boston University, 3-1, in a semifinal game held at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Mo. The Nittany Lions were the fifth different Big Ten team to reach the Frozen Four since 2018.

• The Big Ten sent four teams to the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Michigan State earned the conference’s automatic berth while Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State received at-large berths into the 16-team field. For the fourth-straight year, a Big Ten school advanced to the Frozen Four. During the regular season, the Big Ten compiled the best nonconference record in the country with a 53-20-5 mark (.712), a distinction the conference achieved for the fourth-consecutive season.

• Michigan State junior forward Isaac Howard captured the 45th Hobey Baker Memorial Award as the top player in college hockey. Howard compiled 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points in 37 games. He became the third Spartan and the 12th player from a Big Ten institution to win the Hobey. Three of the last five Hobey recipients have come from the Big Ten.

• The Hobey Baker Award presentation highlighted the “Friday Night at the Frozen Four” awards ceremony held April 11 at the Stifel Theatre in St. Louis. Michigan graduate defenseman Jacob Truscott received the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award, becoming the fourth Big Ten player to receive that honor. Six student-athletes achieved All-America status:

• Michigan State became the fourth team to capture the Big Ten Double, winning the conference regular season championship and the conference tournament in the same season. MSU also accomplished a first by securing the Big Ten Double in back-to-back seasons. Michigan State and Minnesota were crowned co-champions during the regular season, marking the first time that had occurred since Big Ten Hockey began in 2013-14. Minnesota led the conference with 18 Academic All-Big Ten selections.

• The Big Ten had five teams finish in the Top 20 in the final USCHO.com and USA Today/The Rink Live polls. Earning spots were No. 5/5 Penn State, No. 6/6 Michigan State, No. 9/8 Minnesota, No. 11/12 Ohio State and No. 17/17 Michigan.

• A total of 93 former Big Ten players have appeared in the National Hockey League in 2024-25, including five recent signees who played in the Big Ten this season: Karsen Dorwart (MSU/Philadelphia), Oliver Moore (MINN/Chicago), Sam Rinzel (MINN/Chicago), Jimmy Snuggerud (MINN/St. Louis), and Matthew Wood (MINN/Nashville). The Big Ten was home to 54 NHL Draft picks and on the international stage, six Big Ten players and an assistant coach helped the U.S. National Junior Team defend its gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship.

• In NCAA rankings, Michigan State posted the second-best winning percentage (.757) while Minnesota ranked third in scoring offense (3.85), Penn State third in short-handed goals (8) and Wisconsin third in faceoff win percentage (.545). Individually, Isaac Howard led the country in points per game (1.41), Michigan’s Garrett Schifsky ranked second in short-handed goals (3) and Penn State’s Aiden Fink stood third in points per game (1.33).

• Big Ten teams played before large crowds with five schools ranked among the Top 10 in NCAA attendance. The Big Ten produced the four-highest attended games in the NCAA, with three games at the Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series drawing more than 24,000 fans. Michigan and Michigan State also attracted 19,515 spectators for the “Duel in the D” at Little Caesars Arena, along with a viewing audience of 159,000 on the Big Ten Network. Penn State’s Frozen Four game against Boston University on ESPN2 averaged 253,000 viewers.

MSU's Howard Captures the Hobey

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Junior forward Isaac Howard of Michigan State has been named the 45th recipient of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given to the top player in college hockey. Howard was recognized at the Hobey Baker Award ceremony, held Friday at the Stifel Theatre.

Howard leads the NCAA in scoring, averaging 1.41 points per game. The Tamp Bay Lightning draft pick scored 26 goals — tied for third-most in the country — and totaled 26 assists for 52 points in 37 games. He recorded four game-winning goals, including the double overtime game-winner in the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game.

The Hudson, Wis., native was named 2025 Big Ten Player of the Year, chosen to the All-Big Ten First Team and tabbed an AHCA/CCM West First Team All-American.

Howard becomes the third Spartan to win the Hobey, joining Ryan Miller (2021) and Kip Miller (1990). He is the third Big Ten player in five seasons to receive the Hobey and the 12th player from a Big Ten institution bestowed the honor.

Big Ten Players Honored with National Awards

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Seven Big Ten Players achieved national recognition at the "Friday Night at the Frozen Four" awards ceremony, held in conjunction with the Hobey Baker Memorial Award presentation held at the Stifel Theatre.

Graduate defenseman Jacob Truscott of Michigan received the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award, presented by the Hockey Commissioners Association. A two-year captain, Truscott has been involved with Team Impact, made visits to Mott Children’s Hospital, volunteered with Ele’s Place 5K Run and spent time with local nonprofits that have visited Yost Ice Arena. This season he contributed three goals and 13 assists in 36 games.

The Academic All-Big Ten selection graduated with a degree in Applied Exercise Science and is pursuing a graduate certificate in Real Estate Development. Truscott becomes the fourth Big Ten player to win the Hines, joining Ohio State’s Brendon Kearney (2019), Wisconsin’s Aidan Cavalini (2017) and Penn State’s P.J. Musico (2015).

The announcement of the AHCA/CCM All-American teams found six Big Ten players honored. Sophomore goaltender Trey Augustine and junior forward Isaac Howard of Michigan State, along with Minnesota sophomore defenseman Sam Rinzel, were named to the West First Team while Michigan State junior defenseman Matt Basgall, Minnesota junior forward Jimmy Snuggerud and Penn State sophomore forward Aiden Fink were chosen to the West Second Team.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Penn State’s historic hockey season came to an end Thursday evening with a 3-1 loss to Boston University at the NCAA Frozen Four Semifinals held at the Enterprise Center.

No. 12/5-ranked Penn State (22-14-4) trailed 2-0 after two periods before Nicholas DeGraves scored 2:15 into the third period to make it a one-goal game. No. 8/3-ranked Boston U. (24-13-2) scored on an empty net in the closing minute to seal the win.

Penn State’s appearance marked the fourth-straight year a Big Ten team had advanced to the Frozen Four.

• The 2024-25 college hockey season concludes this week at the NCAA Frozen Four in St. Louis, Mo. No. 12/5 Penn State, going for its first national championship, encounters No. 8/3 Boston University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CT in the Enterprise Center — home of the NHL St. Louis Blues. The game will be preceded by No. 6/2 Denver versus No. 3/1 Western Michigan at 4 p.m. CT. The NCAA will crown its 77th champion on Saturday with the title game beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT. All three games will be carried by ESPN2. St. Louis is hosting its third Frozen Four (1975, 2007, 2025) and for the second time at the Enterprise Center.

Penn State (22-13-4) vs. Boston U. (23-13-2)
Penn State’s first appearance in the Frozen Four — in its 13th varsity season — caps a remarkable second-half of the season. On January 1 the Nittany Lions stood last in the Big Ten standings with an 0-8-0 record, two game under .500 overall at 7-9-0. PSU has since gone unbeaten in 19 of 23 games, posting a 15-4-4 mark. Penn State and Boston U. will be meeting for the first time. PSU is 4-3 all-time in NCAA action over four tournaments.

• The Big Ten Conference has sent representatives to the Frozen Four four consecutive years: Penn State (2025), Michigan (2024), Michigan/Minnesota (2023) and Michigan/Minnesota (2022). Since Big Ten Hockey was formed in 2013-14, the conference has qualified 11 teams for the Frozen Four. Three teams have advanced to the championship game as the conference looks for its first national champion.

The event will be highlighted by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award announcement at 5 p.m. CT, televised live on the NHL Network and streamed on HobeyBaker.com. Michigan State’s Isaac Howard is one of three Hat Trick finalists for the award, along with Boston College’s Ryan Leonard and Denver’s Zeev Buium. Howard will look to become the third Spartan to win the award, joining Ryan Miller (2021) and Kip Miller (1990). Other awards to be handed out include the Mike Richter Award (top goaltender) with Trey Augustine of Michigan State a finalist; the Tim Taylor Award (top rookie) with Michigan’s Michael Hage a finalist; the Derek Hines Award (unsung hero) with Michigan’s Jacob Truscott a finalist along with the Hockey Humanitarian Award and the AHCA/CCM All-America Teams.

• Michigan State’s Adam Nightingale and Penn State’s Guy Gadowsky have been named finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, presented to the CCM/AHCA Division I Head Coach of the Year. Nightingale, a Penrose finalist for the second-straight year, led the Spartans to the Big Ten Championship, the Big Ten Tournament title and was chosen Big Ten Coach of the Year. Gadowsky has guided the Nittany Lions to the Frozen Four and a 4-1 postseason record. The winner will be announced Wednesday.

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Matt DiMarsico scored 17:56 into overtime to lift No. 4 seed Penn State to a 3-2 victory over No. 2 seed Connecticut in the NCAA Allentown Regional Final Sunday. The win propelled the Nittany Lions to their first-ever Frozen Four.

No. 12/13-ranked Penn State (22-13-4) will meet No. 8/8-ranked Boston University (23-13-2) of Hockey East on Thursday, April 10, at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Mo. Puck drop will be at 8:30 p.m. ET with ESPN2 broadcasting the national semifinal.

Coach Guy Gadowsky’s squad has been on a tear since the new year began, going unbeaten in 19 of 23 games (15-4-4).

Penn State’s regional victory marks the fourth-straight year the Big Ten Conference will have representation at the Frozen Four.

• The Big Ten Conference will send four teams to the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Championship after crowning its tournament champion on March 22. No. 1 seed Michigan State produced a 4-3 double overtime win over No. 3 seed Ohio State before a sold out crowd of 6,555 at Munn Ice Arena in the longest game in Big Ten Tournament history. The No. 1/1-ranked Spartans received the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament and are joined by No. 5/5 Minnesota, No. 9/9 Ohio State and No. 12/13 Penn State, which received at-large berths. Michigan State is the No. 1 seed in the Toledo Regional and the No. 2 seed overall in the 16-team field. The four teams selected matches a league record set in 2018, 2021, 2023 and 2024. The 77th NCAA Tournament begins this week with regional semifinals followed by regional finals. A look at the participating Big Ten teams:

No. 3 seed Ohio State (23-12-4) vs. No. 2 seed Boston University (21-13-2)
Ohio State is making its 11th trip to the NCAAs, having last appeared in the 2023 Regional Finals. Goaltender Logan Terness set a Big Ten Tournament record with 168 saves in five postseason starts. Steve Rohlik was named Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading the Buckeyes to a third-place finish and appearance in the Big Ten Championship Game. OSU is 0-3 all-time versus Boston University, having played the Terriers in the 2009 NCAA First Round. The Buckeyes last advanced to the Frozen Four in 2018.

Michigan State captured the Big Ten “Double” — regular season and tournament titles — for the second year in a row. Hobey Baker finalist Isaac Howard scored the overtime game-winner in the tournament final and leads the country with a 1.42 points per game average. MSU sports a 6-4-1 record all-time versus Cornell. MSU is making its 29th NCAA appearance and looking to qualify for the Frozen Four for the first time since 2007, when it became the last Big Ten team to capture a national championship.

No. 3 seed Massachusetts (20-13-5) vs. No. 2 seed Minnesota (25-10-4)
Minnesota is making its NCAA-record 42nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament, with its 62 wins being the most by any school. Hobey Baker finalist Jimmy Snuggerud leads the Gophers with 22 goals, 27 assists and 49 points. His 1.26 points per game average ranks 11th nationally. Minnesota last saw action on March 9 in the Big Ten Quarterfinals. Minnesota is 5-0-0 all-time versus Massachusetts, having defeated the Minutemen, 4-3, in overtime in a 2022 First Round game.

No. 4 seed Penn State (20-13-4) vs. No. 1 seed Maine (24-7-6)
Penn State is the host institution for the Allentown Regional (for the second time) as the Nittany Lions make their fourth tournament appearance. Hobey Baker finalist Aiden Fink stands second in NCAA scoring (1.41), having compiled 23 goals and 29 assists for 52 points in 37 contests. PSU reached the Big Ten Semifinals and have posted a 13-4-4 record since Jan. 1. Penn State is meeting Maine for the first time and is seeking its first Frozen Four berth.

Four Big Ten Teams Qualify for the NCAA Hockey Tournament

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four Big Ten teams have been selected to participate in the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship which begins Thursday. The four bids match a Big Ten record that occurred in 2018, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

Michigan State (26-6-4), which captured the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, is a No. 1 seed (No. 2 seed overall) and will host No. 4 seed Cornell (18-10-6) of ECAC Hockey on Thursday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+ at the Huntington Center in the Toledo (Ohio) Regional Semifinals. The No. 9/9-ranked Buckeyes are making their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance, having last qualified in 2023.

Minnesota (25-10-4) is the No. 2 seed at the Fargo (N.D.) Regional and will take on No. 3 seed Massachusetts (20-13-5) of Hockey East in a semifinal on Thursday, March 27, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 Scheels Arena. The No. 5/5-ranked Golden Gophers are making their NCAA-record 42^nd appearance in the tournament, having earned a berth five consecutive seasons.

Penn State (20-13-4), a No. 4 seed, is the host institution for the Allentown (Pa.) Regional and squares off against No. 1 seed Maine (24-7-6) of Hockey East in a semifinal on Friday, March 28, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 at the PPL Center. The No. 13/13-ranked Nittany Lions are making their fourth appearance in the NCAA postseason and first since 2023.

Regional winners will advance to the NCAA Frozen Four, to be held April 10 and 12, at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Mo.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Isaac Howard lifted No. 1 seed Michigan State to a 4-3 double overtime victory over No. 3 seed Ohio State in the Big Ten Hockey Tournament Championship Game on Saturday evening.

Howard scored from near the slot at 15:09, ending the longest game in Big Ten Tournament history before a sellout crowd of 6,555 at Munn Ice Arena and a Big Ten Network viewing audience.

With the victory, Michigan State (26-6-4) captured its second Big Ten Tournament title, adding to the Big Ten regular season championship it won this season. MSU becomes the first program to capture the Big Ten “Double” in consecutive seasons. The top-ranked Spartans receive the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which begins next week. The 16-team field will be revealed tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Ninth-ranked Ohio State (24-13-2), which was making its third appearance in the finals, rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period, scoring twice in a five-minute span. All-Tournament selection Gunnarwolfe Fontaine provided the equalizer with 2:21 left in regulation. MSU built its lead with two power play goals in the opening period and an even-strength marker 42 seconds into the third.

Howard was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Award, tying a championship record with his four-point (two goals, two assists) performance. Ohio State defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata tied a championship record with three assists and teammate Logan Terness finished with 47 saves, including 20 in overtime. At the other end of the ice, MSU netminder Trey Augustine made 38 stops.

• The 2025 Big Ten Hockey Tournament Championship Game will feature a Top 10 battle when No. 1 seed Michigan State plays host to No. 3 seed Ohio State on Saturday (March 22) at 7:30 p.m. at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich. The Big Ten Network will broadcast the game. The Spartans are the consensus No. 1 team in the nation while Ohio State is ranked ninth in both national polls. Last Saturday’s semifinals saw No. 1 seed Michigan State down No. 7 seed Notre Dame, 1-0, and No. 3 seed Ohio State defeat No. 5 seed Penn State, 4-3, in overtime.

• No. 3 seed Ohio State (24-12-2) at No. 1 seed Michigan State (25-6-4)
Ohio State and Michigan State are meeting for the first time in the Big Ten Tournament Final. Michigan State is seeking its second title after defeating Michigan in overtime last year at Munn. Ohio State is making its third appearance in the final, having lost twice in overtime (2018-Notre Dame; 2014-Wisconsin). The Buckeyes have won five of six meetings against the Spartans in the Big Ten Tournament, although MSU defeated OSU, 2-1, in last year’s semifinals at Munn. Michigan State went 3-1-0 against Ohio State this season, winning both contests in East Lansing. MSU has also taken four-straight in the series on home ice dating to last season.

• Michigan State’s Isaac Howard, Minnesota’s Jimmy Snuggerud and Penn State’s Aiden Fink have been named Top Ten Finalists for the Hobey Baker Award. The Big Ten’s three selections are the most of any conference. Fink leads the NCAA in scoring with a 1.41 points per game average (52 points in 37 games), Howard captured the Big Ten scoring title with 33 points in 24 conference games and Snuggerud leads active Big Ten players with 64 career goals in 133 games. The Hobey Baker Hat Trick (three finalists) will be announced on April 3 and the winner unveiled on April 11.

• Trey Augustine of Michigan State is one of four finalists for the Mike Richter Award. The Big Ten’s Goaltender of the Year, Augustine sports a 2.02 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage and 18-6-4 record for the nation’s top-ranked team. A two-time gold medalist for the U.S. National Junior Team, Augustine is the youngest starter in college hockey and is a finalist for the AAU Sullivan Award. This year’s Richter winner will be announced on April 11.

• The Big Ten Conference released its postseason honors on Tuesday. Voting was conducted by conference head coaches and a media panel and winners were revealed live on Big Ten Network’s B1G Today show. Isaac Howard was named Player of the Year, becoming the third Spartan to win that award. Minnesota’s Sam Rinzel was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year and Michigan forward Michael Hage chosen Freshman of the Year, marking the seventh time the Wolverines have captured that honor. Ohio State’s Steve Rohlik was named Coach of the Year for the third time, tying a conference record.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference and the Big Ten Network announced the 2024-25 Big Ten Hockey postseason awards on Tuesday. This year’s winners were revealed live on BTN’s B1G Today.

This year's honors included individual awards, All-Big Ten teams, the All-Freshman Team and Sportsmanship awards. Voting was conducted by conference head coaches and a media panel.

Michigan State junior forward Isaac Howard was named Big Ten Player of the Year. The Hudson, Wis., native captured the Big Ten scoring title with 33 points in 24 conference games. He is the third Spartan to be named Player of the Year.

Minnesota sophomore defenseman Sam Rinzel was chosen Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Rinzel leads all Big Ten blueliners in scoring with 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points in 39 games. He becomes the sixth recipient of the award for the Gophers.

Michigan forward Michael Hage, a Montreal Canadien first round draft pick, received the Big Ten Freshman of the Year Award after pacing conference rookies in scoring with 24 points (8 goals, 16 assists) in 22 league games. He is the seventh Wolverine player to earn the award.

Michigan State sophomore Trey Augustine was tabbed Big Ten Goaltender of the Year. He finished with a conference-best 12 wins in league play while recording the second-most saves (553). He is the second MSU goaltender to win the award and the first since 2015.

Steve Rohlik of Ohio State was selected as Big Ten Coach of the Year. He led a Buckeye squad picked seventh in the preseason poll to a third-place finish and an appearance in the Big Tournament Championship Game. It is the third time Rohlik has been named Coach of the Year, tying him with Minnesota’s Bob Motzko for the most awards among conference coaches.

The Big Ten also recognized seven Sportsmanship Award honorees. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished through sportsmanship, academics, ethical behavior and citizenship.

ROSEMONT, lll. — Top seed Michigan State and No. 3 seed Ohio State won semifinal games on Saturday to advance to the Big Ten Hockey Tournament Championship Game, set for Saturday (March 22) in East Lansing, Mich. The 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop will be covered by the Big Ten Network.

Michigan State (25-6-4) looks to defend its Big Ten Tournament title after defeating No. 7 seed Notre Dame, 1-0, at Munn Ice Arena. The No. 2/2-ranked Spartans will host the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game for the second-straight year.

Ohio State (24-12-2) defeated No. 5 seed Penn State, 4-3, in overtime at Value City Arena in the Schottenstein Center. The No. 10/10-ranked Buckeyes will appear in their third championship game (2014, 2018, 2025) as they seek their first conference tournament title.

• The 2025 Big Ten Hockey Tournament continues Saturday with semifinals on campus sites. No. 1 seed Michigan State will host No. 7 seed Notre Dame at 6 p.m. ET and No. 3 seed Ohio State encounters No. 5 seed Penn State at 8:30 p.m. ET in Columbus. Both games will be carried on the Big Ten Network. The winners advance to the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday, March 22, to be hosted by the highest remaining seed.

• The Big Ten Tournament opened with best-of-three quarterfinal series last weekend and produced a pair of upsets. Visiting teams won all three games on Friday and Penn State became the first team to sweep on the road when it defeated No. 4 seed Michigan on Saturday. In a decisive third game, Notre Dame became the second-straight No. 7 seed to win a quarterfinal series, downing Minnesota on its home ice. The loss marked just the second time in 12 years that Minnesota did not reach the semifinals. Meanwhile, No. 7 seeds are now 4-14 all-time in tournament play. On Sunday evening, Ohio State won its second elimination game in as many nights to complete a series comeback against No. 6 seed Wisconsin. The Badgers were 89 seconds away from a sweep Saturday before OSU scored an extra skater goal and won in overtime to force a third game.

Notre Dame Head Coach Jeff Jackson earned his 600th win on Friday and hopes to lead the Irish to their first Big Ten Final since 2019. No. 2/2-ranked Michigan State earned a bye last week and went 4-0-0 against Notre Dame during the regular season. The teams have met five times in the Big Ten Tournament, most recently in the 2023 quarterfinals, which produced MSU’s first-ever BTT win and series win. Notre Dame leads all-time, 3-2.

No. 5 seed Penn State (20-12-4) at No. 3 seed Ohio State (23-12-2)
Freshman JJ Wiebusch of Penn State made the most of his Big Ten postseason debut, scoring the seventh hat trick in tournament history. His between-the-legs goal was the overtime winner Friday and he added another tally on Saturday. No. 11/11 Penn State is unbeaten in 17 of 20 games (13-3-4) since Jan. 1. No. 10/10 Ohio State is the only Big Ten team that has not won a Big Ten Tournament but the Buckeyes do own the second-most wins (17) in tournament play. OSU took the season series from PSU, 2-1-1, and the programs have split eight games in the BTT with the Buckeyes most recently capturing a 2023 quarterfinal series, two-games-to-one.

• Big Ten Hockey Postseason Awards — all-conference teams, the all-freshman team and individual award winners — will be announced live on the BTN’s Big Ten Today on Tuesday, March 18. Balloting is conducted by conference head coaches and a media panel.

No. 5 Penn State completed the first upset of the Big Ten Hockey Tournament, downing No. 4 seed Michigan on Saturday to sweep the best-of-three quarterfinals series. No. 2 Minnesota and No. 3 Ohio State also posted wins to force decisive game threes on Sunday.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Penn State continued its torrid play of late, receiving goals from five different players in a 5-2 win at Yost Ice Arena.

Michigan scored just 1:23 into the contest, but Penn State answered 14 seconds later and scored late in the opening period to claim a lead it did not relinquish. Four players recorded multiple-point games for the Nittany Lions, who will learn later tonight their opponent for the Big Ten Semifinals.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 6 Wisconsin at Nationwide Arena.

Gunnarwolfe Fontaine scored with the goalie pulled with 1:29 left in regulation and Riley Thompson notched the game winner 7:30 into overtime.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Minnesota evened its series against No. 7 Notre Dame with a 4-2 win at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

The Gophers finished with a 35-23 advantage in shots and with a win on Sunday, can clinch home ice for next week's semifinals.

Upsets Highlight Opening Night of Big Ten Hockey Tournament

Road teams were victorious in all three games on opening night of the 2025 Big Ten Hockey Tournament on Friday. Three lower seeds — No. 5 Penn State, No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 7 Notre Dame — will attempt to advance to the semifinals when best-of-three games series continue Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Wisconsin defeated No. 3 Ohio State for the first time this season with a 4-1 win at Nationwide Arena.

The Badgers built a 3-0 lead after two periods, receiving a pair of assists from Christian Fitzgerald and 28 saves from goaltender Tommy Scarfone.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — High-scoring affairs are nothing new to Penn State and Michigan and it continue Friday at Yost Ice Arena as the Nittany Lions prevailed, 6-5, in overtime.

JJ Wiebusch completed a hat trick with a nifty shot between the legs to notch the game-winner five minutes into overtime. Teammate Aiden Fink contributed four assists.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Notre Dame toppled No. 2 seed Minnesota, 3-2, at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Axel Kumlin scored just 1:30 into the opening period and the Fighting Irish never trailed, despite being out-shot 32-24 for the game. Notre Dame's Jeff Jackson recorded his 600th career win.

• The 12th Big Ten Hockey Tournament begins this week with three quarterfinal series in a best-of-three format. Winners advance to next week’s single-elimination semifinals. Michigan State, which claimed the No. 1 seed via tiebreaker, has earned an opening round bye and will host a semifinal game March 15. All quarterfinal games will be streamed on B1G+. The tournament pairings for this weekend:

No. 7 seed Notre Dame (10-23-1) at No. 2 seed Minnesota (24-8-4)
No. 3/3 Minnesota will extend its streak of hosting home playoff games to at least seven games when it meets Notre Dame this weekend. The Gophers took three of four from the Irish this season although the teams are dead even (2-2) all-time in the Big Ten Tournament. Notre Dame Head Coach Jeff Jackson is one win shy of 600 for his career and is the only coach to have won multiple Big Ten Tournaments (2).

No. 9/10 Ohio State and Wisconsin will meet for the second-straight postseason. As the seventh seed last year, the Buckeyes pulled off the quarterfinals upset. Ohio State Head Coach Steve Rohlik has won eight of nine games (and five-straight) versus his alma mater dating to last season. His 15 wins in the Big Ten Tournament are the most by any coach. Ohio State leads Wisconsin, 4-3, all-time in the Big Ten postseason. This weekend’s games will take place at Nationwide Arena.

No. 5 seed Penn State (18-12-4) at No. 4 seed Michigan (18-13-3)
No. 11/11 Michigan took three of four games from No. 15/15 Penn State this season, finishing with a 27-19 scoring margin. Both teams enter the postseason with 18 wins and nearly identical overall records. Michigan Head Coach Brandon Naurato owns the best winning percentage in Big Ten Tournament history (.875 / 7-1) while Penn State Head Coach Guy Gadowsky is coming off his 400th career win achieved on Friday. PSU owns a 2-1 edge against Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament.

• Michigan State and Minnesota became the first schools to share a Big Ten Hockey Championship with victories in their respective season finales on Saturday. A year to the day of its first championship (March 1), MSU defended its title while Minnesota claimed its seventh crown overall. It marked the sixth time in 12 seasons the championship was decided on the last day of the season.

• Michigan State’s Isaac Howard fended off three contenders to capture the Big Ten scoring title with 33 points (16-17) in 24 games. Minnesota’s Jimmy Snuggerud (32), Penn State’s Aiden Fink (31) and Michigan’s T.J. Hughes (30) finished just behind Howard, who joined Taro Hirose (2018-19) as the only other Spartan to win a conference scoring title.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference released on Saturday the bracket for the 2025 Big Ten Hockey Tournament, a three-weekend event that will have all games hosted by higher-seeded teams.

Michigan State and Minnesota finished as the first co-champions in Big Ten Hockey history with the Spartans earning the No. 1 seed based on a tiebreaker. The 12th Big Ten Tournament begins March 7-9 with three best-of-three quarterfinal series. No. 2 seed Minnesota (24-8-4) will host No. 7 seed Notre Dame (10-23-1), No. 3 seed Ohio State (21-11-2) will entertain No. 6 seed Wisconsin (12-19-3) and No. 4 seed Michigan (18-13-3) will host No. 5 seed Penn State (18-12-4).

As the top-seeded team, Michigan State (24-6-4) will have a bye to the single-elimination semifinals, which are scheduled for March 15. The highest-seeded team advancing from the quarterfinals will host the second-highest advancing team, while the lowest-seeded advancing team will play at Michigan State.

The highest-seeded team remaining after the semifinals will host the single-elimination championship game on Saturday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The quarterfinals will be streamed on B1G+ with the semifinals and championship game carried by the Big Ten Network.

The tournament champion will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Based on a tiebreaker, Michigan State earned the top seed and a quarterfinals bye for the Big Ten Tournament, which begins March 7. • The Big Ten Hockey regular season concludes this week with three teams still in contention for the championship trophy. Minnesota is looking for its seventh title overall (and third in four seasons), Michigan State aims to defend its title and Ohio State goes for its first crown since 2019. MSU and OSU are both seeking their second banners overall. In 11 previous seasons, there has never been a tie for the championship, which is allowed under Big Ten rules. The closest race occurred in 2015-16 when Minnesota edged Michigan by a point. The regular season champion receives the No. 1 seed and a quarterfinals bye for the 2025 Big Ten Tournament, which begins next week.

• No. 2/2 Minnesota, which moved into first place last weekend, takes on No. 15/16 Penn State, which is unbeaten in nine of its last 10 games (7-1-2) and still in contention for home playoff ice. The teams last met Nov. 1-2 when Minnesota allowed one goal in a weekend home sweep. No. 3/3 Michigan State, two points back of first, travels to Notre Dame. Notre Dame’s Jeff Jackson will coach his final home games at the Compton Family Ice Arena where he has spent 19 seasons behind the bench. No. 11/11 Michigan renews its rivalry with No. 8/10 Ohio State in Columbus, starting Thursday night. The schools split a pair of one-goal decisions to start the new year. Both games of the series will be carried on the Big Ten Network, as will both nights of the Minnesota-Penn State series. Wisconsin, which has finished its conference slate, plays host to the U.S. National Team Development Program for an exhibition game Sunday at the Kohl Center.

• With postseason action just around the corner, attention turns to the Pairwise Rankings, which mimics the selection criteria used to fill the at-large slots for the 16-team NCAA Tournament. The latest Pairwise finds Michigan State ranked second, Minnesota rated third, Ohio State and Michigan tied for 10th and Penn State listed at No. 15.

• The Big Ten scoring title is coming down to the wire with three points separating four players, all of whom will be in action this weekend. Michigan State’s Isaac Howard leads the pack with 32 points (15-17), just ahead of Minnesota’s Jimmy Snuggerud (18-12—30). Penn State’s Aiden Fink (17-12—29) and Michigan’s T.J. Hughes (14-15—29) are tied for third. Snuggerud is pursuing his second scoring title, a feat accomplished just once before by Cole Caufield of Wisconsin. In the NCAA ranks, Howard and Fink are part of a four-way tie in overall scoring, averaging 1.41 points per game based on their 45-point campaigns.

• The 12th edition of the Big Ten Hockey Tournament begins the weekend of March 7-9 with best-of-three quarterfinal games. Single elimination semifinal contests take place on March 15 with the championship game slated for March 22 at the site of the highest remaining seed. The tournament winner receives the Big Ten’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

• The penultimate week of the Big Ten Hockey season finds No. 1/1 Michigan State with an opportunity to clinch a share of the Big Ten Championship as the conference race tightens. Michigan State holds a three-point lead over No. 7/6 Ohio State and No. 5/4 Minnesota with four games remaining. The Spartans can clinch a share of the regular season title if they: 1.) win twice in regulation and 2.) Ohio State and Minnesota both earn no more than three points over the weekend. MSU will host No. 18/17 Penn State, which has won eight of 10 games (8-1-1) since last meeting the Spartans on Jan. 11. No. 5/4 Minnesota will take on No. 7/6 Ohio State in Minneapolis in a showdown of Top 10 programs. The teams split in Columbus with OSU posting a 5-1 win on Jan. 10 and Minnesota answering with a 6-1 victory the next night. Rv/rv Wisconsin concludes its conference slate against Notre Dame. The two sides split one-goal games earlier this season, which should come as no surprise, as the teams are tied in conference play (14-14-2) dating to ND’s entry into the Big Ten in 2017-18. The Big Ten Network will broadcast doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, starting with Penn State-Michigan State, followed by Notre Dame-Wisconsin. The Ohio State-Minnesota series will be televised on FOX 9 and streamed on B1G+.

• Three teams — Michigan State, Ohio State and Minnesota — have claimed home ice for the Big Ten Hockey Tournament which commences the weekend of March 7-9 with best-of-three quarterfinal games. The No. 1 seed receives a bye into the tournament semifinals on March 15. The championship game is slated for March 22. All games for the 12th edition of the tournament will be hosted by the higher-seeded team.

• Michigan State has reclaimed the top spot in the USCHO.com and USA Hockey/The Rink Live national polls. It is the first time since Jan. 13 the Spartans have been the consensus No. 1, a position they have occupied for seven weeks at various points this season. No. 5/4 Minnesota remains in the Top 10 for the 33rd consecutive week (dating back to last season) while No. 7/6 Ohio State has achieved its highest rankings of the season. A total five Big Ten teams are cited in the Top 20 with Wisconsin receiving votes.

• Sophomore Trey Augustine of Michigan State has been named a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award, given to the nation’s top goaltender. He is one of ten student-athletes on the list, which will be pared down to three finalists in March. Augustine leads Big Ten netminders with 15 wins and ranks second in goals-against average (2.07) and save percentage (.926). The South Lyon, Mich., native was also tabbed a semifinalist for the AAU James E. Sullivan Award, presented annually to the most outstanding athlete at the collegiate or Olympic level in the United States. A two-time gold medalist with the U.S. National Junior Team, Augustine is one of 39 semifinalists in a field that includes 13 current or former Big Ten student-athletes. • Just three weeks remain in the regular season for Big Ten Hockey teams jockeying for positions in the standings. No. 2/2 Michigan State is off this week, having secured home ice for the Big Ten Tournament, which begins the weekend of March 7-9. No. 4/3 Minnesota, five points behind in second, travels to No. 12/12 Michigan this weekend. The Gophers recorded consecutive road shutout wins against the Wolverines in December. Michigan, which owns the best power play (26.8%) in the Big Ten, currently holds the last home playoff slot. Saturday’s game is the first of a hockey doubleheader on the Big Ten Network. No. 8/8 Ohio State will go for a season series sweep when it hosts rv/rv Wisconsin. The Buckeyes won a pair of one-goal games in Madison to kick start the Big Ten season in October while the Badgers look to end a five-game winless skid (0-4-1). Saturday’s tilt will be the second game of BTN’s doubleheader and is also available on the FOX Sports App. No. 18/18 Penn State has re-entered the Top 20 for the first time since November, matching the team’s highest ranking of the season. PSU will host Notre Dame in a series the Fighting Irish lead, 18-7-5, dating back to the start of Big Ten play in 2013-14.

• The Duel in the D clash between Michigan State and Michigan drew a sold-out audience of 19,515 to Little Caesars Arena. The Big Ten has now produced the top four attended games in the NCAA this season and seven of the top 10 crowds. Saturday’s game in Detroit was surpassed only by the three games played at the Frozen Confines on Jan. 3-4 that attracted crowds of 25,000-plus to Wrigley Field.

• A late-season surge by Penn State has resulted in a 6-1-3 record since January 11. In net, goaltender Arsenii Sergeev — this week’s Big Ten No. 1 Star — has set a program record with four shutouts on the season and with one more will become the school’s career shutout leader. PSU is especially effective when scoring first, generating a 11-4-1 record when doing so.

• Minnesota forward Jimmy Snuggerud was one of three student-athletes named National Player of the Month for January by the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) on Feb. 6. Snuggerud compiled 11 goals and six assist for 17 points in nine games to start the new year. His selection marked the fourth-straight month a Big Ten player has received an HCA Award. Notre Dame’s Owen Say was co-Goaltender of the Month in October, Michigan’s Michael Hage the Rookie of the Month for November and Ohio State’s Kristoffer Eberly the Goaltender of the Month for December.

• The 4 Nations Face-Off, an international tournament featuring the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden, will feature five Big Ten alumni. F Kyle Connor (Michigan), D Brock Faber (Minnesota), F Dylan Larkin (Michigan) and D Zach Werenski (Michigan) will represent the United States while F Erik Haula (Minnesota) skates for Finland. 4 Nations will be the first best-on-best tournament since the World Cup of Hockey in 2016 and takes place Feb. 12-20 in Montreal and Boston.

• The Big Ten Hockey regular season enters its final month with a slate of games this weekend. The most-played rivalry in college hockey resumes when No. 2/2 Michigan State and No. 13/13 Michigan clash for the 351st and 352nd time. The teams will battle for the Iron D Trophy at the Duel in the D inside Little Caesars Arena Saturday in a game televised by the Big Ten Network. The Great Lakes rivals split a conference series three weeks ago and met twice in the postseason last year with Michigan State winning the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game and Michigan prevailing in an NCAA Regional Final. Elsewhere No. 9/11 Ohio State travels to Notre Dame in a rematch of a December series that saw the Buckeyes win a pair of games by the scores of 2-1 (OT) and 3-1. OSU took a game from No. 2/2 Michigan State last week in Columbus while Notre Dame is coming off a bye week. No. 19/20 Wisconsin continues its pursuit of postseason home ice by hosting Penn State, which is unbeaten in five of its last six games (4-1-1). Wisconsin defeated Penn State twice on the road in November. No. 3/3 Minnesota goes into a bye week as the highest scoring team in the country, having scored 121 goals for a 4.03 game average.

• As the conference season hits the homestretch, the chase for the individual scoring title is heating up. Jimmy Snuggerud (17-11—28) of Minnesota owns a one-point lead over Michigan State’s Isaac Howard (14-13—27) while Michigan’s T.J. Hughes (12-13—25) is three points back. Aiden Fink is in contention to become Penn State’s first scoring champion, sitting fourth in the race (13-8—21). Michigan has captured five scoring titles, the most of any school.

• Jacob Truscott, an Academic All-Big Ten defenseman at Michigan, is one 14 student-athletes who has been nominated for the 30th Hockey Humanitarian Award, which recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen. A two-year captain, Truscott has been involved with Team Impact, made visits to Mott Children’s Hospital, volunteered with Ele’s Place 5K Run and spent time with local nonprofits that have visited Yost Ice Arena. Truscott graduated with a degree in Applied Exercise Science and is pursuing a graduate certificate in Real Estate Development. Finalists for the Hockey Humanitarian will be announced later this month and the winner revealed during the “Friday Night at the Frozen Four” awards ceremony. Penn State’s Dylan Lugris received the award last year, becoming the fourth Big Ten player honored.

• The 12th edition of the Big Ten Hockey Tournament begins the weekend of March 7-9 with best-of-three quarterfinal games. Single elimination semifinal contests take place on March 15 with the championship game slated for March 22 at the site of the highest remaining seed. This year’s event will mark the seventh time tournament games have taken place on campus.

• The Big Ten has 15 candidates entered in the 2025 Hobey Baker Award fan vote, which continues through March 30. On-line voting can be accessed at https://hobeybaker.com/vote.

• Big Ten Hockey closes the month of January with three conference series as the top four teams square off. No. 2/2 Michigan State, which has opened a five-point lead atop the standings, travels to No. 11/11 Ohio State. Thursday’s game will be carried by the Big Ten Network. The first team in the nation to reach 20 wins, the Spartans have won six of their last seven against the Buckeyes. OSU resides in third place after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll. The Border Battle resumes Friday when No. 17/18 Wisconsin takes on No. 4/4 Minnesota in Minneapolis. The Badgers are back in the Top-20 polls for the first time since October 21 while the Gophers look for a series sweep after taking a pair of one-goal games from Wisconsin in mid-November. No. 13/12 Michigan returns to Yost Ice Arena to host rv/rv Penn State, which is unbeaten in its last five games (3-0-2). Michigan swept two high-scoring affairs at PSU just before Thanksgiving by a 16-11 margin. Notre Dame is idle this week.

• No lead was safe last weekend as Big Ten teams battled for valuable points in the standings. Wisconsin overcame a 3-1 first-period deficit against Michigan on Saturday, coming back to force a 4-4 tie. The night before, Wisconsin rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second period to beat Michigan, 5-4. That same night, Penn State dug itself out of a 3-0 hole against Ohio State, in a game that ended in a 6-6 tie. It matched the second-highest tied game in Big Ten history, trailing only a 7-7 contest between Ohio State and Michigan State on Jan. 4, 2019.

• Penn State drew a record crowd of 6,604 to Pegula Ice Arena on Saturday, continuing a trend of full arenas around the conference. Five Big Ten schools rank in the Top-10 nationally in attendance — Wisconsin (2nd), Minnesota (3rd), Michigan State (6th), Penn State (8th) and Michigan (9th). Michigan State is playing to 107.2 percent capacity at Munn Ice Arena, Michigan to 98.2 percent capacity and Minnesota to 96.1 percent capacity. Total home attendance this season for Big Ten teams has surpassed half a million (606,393). In addition, five of the six largest attended games involved Big Ten teams, topped by crowds of 25,709 and 24,788 that attended the Frozen Confines at Wrigley Field.
