Maryland's Ford Named to CSC Academic All-America At-Large Second Team

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Maryland men’s lacrosse student-athlete Bryce Ford was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Men's At-Large Second Team on Tuesday.

The graduate played a crucial part in Maryland's run to the NCAA tournament finals in May, scoring at least one goal in every tournament game.

On the season, he tallied 23 goals, 10 assists, 12 ground balls and two caused turnovers. He also earned USILA All-American Honorable Mention, and was drafted 32nd overall by the Utah Archers of the PLL in June.

New Era Begins As House Settlement Approved

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 6, 2025 – Today marks a historic milestone for college athletics in the United States. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has granted final approval to a settlement in the House v. NCAA (“House”) litigation. This landmark settlement – agreed to by plaintiffs representing nearly 400,000 current and former student-athletes and the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference (SEC) – will reshape the landscape of college sports, paving the way for a model that prioritizes fairness, stability, integrity and opportunity for student-athletes and institutions.

Overseeing this model will be the newly established College Sports Commission – an independent body that will be responsible for implementing the settlement terms governing revenue sharing, student-athlete Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and roster limits. The Commission will investigate any potential violations of these rules, make determinations regarding potential rules violations and penalties, provide notice and opportunity to be heard, participate in the arbitration process and ultimately administer penalties for violations of these rules. The Commission’s leadership team will be announced in the near future.

Under the new system, student-athletes will have more opportunities to financially benefit during their participation in intercollegiate athletics than ever before. Institutions are now able to share revenue directly with student-athletes, in addition to providing existing benefits such as athletic scholarships, access to world-class training facilities, academic counseling, medical care, post-eligibility medical coverage, mental health resources, nutritional guidance and life skills development.

Beginning July 1, 2025, each year, participating schools can distribute up to 22% of the average revenue among schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC from media rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships – known as the revenue sharing cap. The cap is estimated at $20.5 million per school for the 2025-26 academic year, pending final confirmation. To ensure revenue sharing with student-athletes is appropriately managed and reported to the Court for compliance, athletics departments will use the new College Athlete Payment System (CAPS) platform developed by LBi Software.

Student-athletes will also be able to continue receiving compensation from third-parties other than their institutions for the use of their NIL, so long as their NIL deals are made with the purpose of using their NIL for a valid business purpose and do not exceed a reasonable range of compensation. On behalf of the College Sports Commission, Deloitte* has built and will maintain a new technology platform called NIL Go in which student-athletes will be required to report their NIL deals to confirm they are in compliance with the rules. Deals will be evaluated based on:

Payor association – The relationship between the payor and the student-athlete’s school.
Valid business purpose – Whether the payor is seeking the use of the student-athlete’s NIL for a valid business purpose, meaning to sell a good or service to the public for profit.
Range of compensation – Whether the compensation paid to the student-athlete is commensurate with compensation paid to similarly situated individuals.

Finally, for participating schools, NCAA scholarship limits have been removed and roster limits have been established for each sport, allowing for a significant increase in scholarship opportunities for student-athletes. Under this new model, schools will have the option to offer partial or full scholarships to every student-athlete on a team’s roster, as long as the total number of student-athletes stays within the sport’s specific roster limit. Efforts have also been made to ensure current and immediately incoming student-athletes are not adversely impacted by the establishing of roster limits. Removing scholarship limits allows schools to better support their student-athletes through new scholarships, particularly in non-revenue-generating sports.

“We look forward to implementing this historic settlement designed to bring stability, integrity and competitive balance to college athletics while increasing both scholarship and revenue opportunities for student-athletes in all sports,” said Tony Petitti, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference.

“This is a significant moment for college athletics that will provide unparalleled opportunities for student-athletes. We look forward to implementing this new system which offers much-needed transparency and structure to create a more sustainable model for the long-term future of college athletics,” said Jim Phillips, Ph.D., Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“As we enter this new era of college athletics, it is crucial we do so with structure, transparency, and the success of student-athletes in mind — this settlement and new model will ensure that happens. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to implement this new system that prioritizes fairness and opportunity for all student-athletes and institutions," said Brett Yormark, Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.

"It's a new day in collegiate athletics. This historic moment allows us to maintain what makes college sports special, the development of young individuals through sport, while also evolving to meet today's student-athletes where they are with new opportunities in a manner that provides long-term stability for collegiate athletics. I am proud to work alongside my colleagues as we implement and introduce the future of college sports,” said Teresa Gould, Commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference.

“The approval of the House settlement agreement represents a significant milestone for the meaningful support of our student-athletes and a pivotal step toward establishing long-term sustainability for college sports, two of the Southeastern Conference’s top priorities. As the journey to modernize collegiate sports continues, we remain focused on identifying and implementing innovative opportunities for our student-athletes across all sports while maintaining the core values that make collegiate athletics uniquely meaningful,” said Greg Sankey, Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.

Following are significant dates related to the implementation of the settlement:

June 6, 2025: Settlement approved; settlement-related NCAA rules are effective, as adopted by the NCAA Division 1 Board on April 21, 2025.
June 11 2025: NIL Go portal launches.
June 15, 2025: Opt-in deadline for non-defendant schools to fully commit to revenue sharing.
July 6, 2025: Opt-in schools must “designate” student-athletes permitted by the settlement to remain above roster limits.
July 1, 2025: First date for direct institutional revenue sharing payments to student-athletes.
Start of 2025-26 academic year: With the exception of the “designated” student-athletes, Fall sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition.
December 1, 2025: With the exception of “designated” student-athletes, Winter and Spring sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition or Dec. 1, whichever is earlier.

2025 BIG TEN TOURNAMENT RECAP

The NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament begins with play-in games Thursday, May 8. Eight sites will host first- and second-round competition on Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11. Four quarterfinal games will be played Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18. These preliminary-round games will be played on the campuses of competing institutions. The quarterfinals will take place in Hempstead, New York and Annapolis, Maryland. Winners will advance to the NCAA national semifinals and championship, which will take place May 24 and 26 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Games in the first round, quarterfinals and semis will be broadcast on ESPN2 and ESPNU. The National Championship game will be broadcast live on ESPN at 1pm ET.

Maryland Falls Short of NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Title

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In its 18^th NCAA Championship appearance, No. 2 Maryland was unable to win its fifth NCAA title after a hard-fought 13-10 loss versus No. 1 Cornell.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Terrapins went to the locker room down 6-5, only giving up one goal to Cornell’s Tewaaraton front-runner CJ Kirst. However, in the second half, Kirst figured out the Terrapins defense and scored three goals to put the Big Red up 9-6 with 9:23 remaining in the fourth. Maryland clawed back after Elijah Stobaugh scored his 10^th goal of the season to make the game 10-9, but Kirst added his fifth and sixth goals of the day to help put Cornell up 13-10 with 0:50 remaining to close out the game.

Logan McNaney capped off a terrific season with 11 saves, and Eric Spanos led all Maryland players with two goals and two assists on the day.

Regardless of the result, the Terrapins had an accomplished season, beating multiple top teams like Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State, Princeton and Syracuse twice, made the finals in the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments, and saw defenseman Will Schaller earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors.

In its 100^th season, Maryland cemented its place as one of the premier lacrosse programs in the NCAA. The Terrapins have appeared in the NCAA tournament 47 times, advanced to the finals 18 times, and won four NCAA championships. With its win over Syracuse on Saturday, the Terrapins also joined Johns Hopkins and Syracuse as one of three programs to have 900 total wins. The Terrapins, however, have the strongest winning percentage (.754) of any team in the country.

Maryland Routes Syracuse in NCAA Lacrosse Semifinals

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In the second semifinal of the day, No. 2 Maryland dominated No. 6 Syracuse 14-7 to advance to the NCAA title game for the second year in a row.

Syracuse’s Owen Hiltz scored the first goal of the day, but after Eric Spanos’ first goal to tie the game, the Terrapins never looked back. Thanks to an additional goal from Spanos and six more goals from five different Maryland players, the Terrapins walked into the locker room with an 8-2 lead at half.

The Orange could never catch up, and the team that posted 19 goals in its quarterfinal win was held to just eight total on the day against the Terrapins stout defense. Goalie Logan McNaney, an All-Big Ten first teamer, made 14 saves on 21 shots to keep the Orange at bay.

Eric Spanos led all scorers with four goals, but it was a well-balanced effort as eight different Maryland players scored.

Maryland is now making its second consecutive title game and 18th title game appearance overall on Monday, May 26 at 1:00pm EST on ESPN. The Terrapins will play No. 1 Cornell, who are led by Tewaaraton finalist CJ Kirst. Their lone loss this season came against Penn State on March 8, but they beat the Nittany Lions in the first game of the semifinals earlier Saturday afternoon.

Penn State Falls to Cornell in NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Semifinals

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Despite a strong performance from the defense, Penn State lost to No. 1 Cornell 11-9 in the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Semifinals. The Nittany Lions’ defense held Tewaaraton finalist CJ Kirst scoreless and forced 15 total turnovers, but the Big Red proved to be too much in the second half outscoring Penn State 7-4.

Penn State trailed 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter, but then showed similar signs of its comeback earlier this season on March 8 against Cornell when they came back from down four goals to win 13-12 in overtime.

The Nittany Lions scored three unanswered to make it 10-9, but this time Cornell’s leading scorer on the day, Hugh Keller, scored the final goal of the game with 5:49. The Big Red kept the distance the rest of the way.

Sophomore Liam Matthews had a breakout game for Penn State. He scored four goals, two of which were highlight-reel behind the back plays. Matt Traynor also added two goals for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State finished the 2025 season with 12 wins, the most since 2019 when the Nittany Lions made the final four with 16 wins. It had highlight wins over No. 1 Cornell in the regular season and defending national champions Notre Dame in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Nittany Lion players Matt Traynor and Hunter Aquino also won Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, respectively.

22 From Big Ten Earn USILA Lacrosse All-American Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – USILA announced its 2025 Special Awards and All-Americans, which includes 22 Big Ten players. All-Americans are nominated by their coach and then received votes from the All-American Committee.

Ohio State’s Caleb Fyock won the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Outstanding Goalie award and Bobby Van Buren won the William C. Schmeisser Co-Defensive Player of the Year award after each played a crucial part in the Buckeyes’ historic season, which included Big Ten regular season and tournament titles.

In addition to Fyock and Van Buren, Maryland’s Will Schaller was awarded First Team honors.

Schaller, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, recorded 22 caused turnovers and 28 ground balls on the season. He helped lead the Terrapins to back-to-back NCAA semifinals appearances and will attempt to lead the Terrapins back to the finals on Saturday, May 24 at 2:30 p.m. ET against No. 6 Syracuse.

Maryland led all Big Ten schools with seven players awarded honors. Ohio State (6), Rutgers (2), Penn State (3), Johns Hopkins (2), Michigan (2) rounded out the honors for the Big Ten.

Both Maryland and Penn State will each look to bring home an NCAA title this weekend in Foxborough, Mass. No. 2 Maryland takes on No. 6 Syracuse, who the Terrapins beat 11-7 on Feb. 15 in College Park earlier this season. No. 5 Penn State will take on No. 1 Cornell, who the Nittany Lions beat 13-12 in overtime on March 8 in Ithica earlier this season.

Maryland Advances to Second-Consecutive NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Semifinal

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maryland became the second Big Ten team to advance to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse semifinals after beating Georgetown 9-6 on Sunday.

Maryland jumped to an early 3-1 lead, but Georgetown answered with a three-goal run. Eric Spanos then connected on a pass from Braden Erksa and netted his first goal of the day to even the score at 4-4. Bryce Ford tacked on another goal to give the Terrapins the lead heading into halftime.

The game remained close throughout the third period and heading into the fourth period, the Terrapins only lead 6-5. Erksa then scored two of his three goals to open the final period, giving the Terrapins an 8-6 lead.

Daniel Kelly scored a goal with 2:21 to provide further separation and ice the game. The Terrapins defense held strong for the remainder of the game and didn't allow another goal to secure the win.

Big Ten All-First Team goalie Logan McNaney was stellar in the net. He made 11 saves and only allowed six goals on the day. The Maryland defense contributed heavily to McNaney’s successful day and caused five turnovers.

With the win, Maryland advances to play No. 3 Syracuse on Saturday, May 24 at 2:30 p.m. ET. The Terrapins beat the Orange in College Park 11-7 earlier this season on Feb. 15.

Penn State Makes Improbable Comeback to Advance to NCAA Men's Lacrosse Semifinals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – With 12 seconds remaining in the third period, Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Matt Traynor leaped from behind the goal and stretched his stick out to sneak the ball past Notre Dame goalie Thomas Ricciardelli. Traynor’s goal put the Nittany Lions within three goals at 12-9.

Penn State trailed 12-6 with 5:56 remaining in the third period, but an 8-0 run the rest of the game to prevail 14-12 over defending back-to-back champions Notre Dame. With the win, the Nittany Lions advance to their first NCAA Men’s Lacrosse semifinals since 2023.

Penn State took a 2-0 lead early in the first period, but Chris Kavanaugh and the Fighting Irish showed why they won the last two NCAA championships and went on a 8-1 run until the start of the fourth period.

After Traynor’s highlight reel goal, Kyle Lehman followed it up with two of his own to bring the game within one goal at 12-11. Traynor then notched two more goals, including another highlight reel over-the-shoulder goal, giving the Nittany Lions the lead at 13-12, their first since 7:10 in the first period.

On the day, Traynor tallied six goals leading all scorers. Ethan Long and Kyle Lehman each finished with a hat trick. The defense overcame its early struggles and forced four turnovers in the second half.

Penn State will play No. 1 Cornell on Saturday, May 24 at 12:00 p.m. EST on ESPN2. The Nittany Lions made a similar comeback against the Big Red in the regular season, winning 13-12 in overtime on March 8. Long had the game winner and Big Ten Freshman of the Year Hunter Aquino tallied a goal and four assists.

24 From Big Ten Named Inside Lacrosse Media All-Americans

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Inside Lacrosse recognized its 2025 Nike Men’s Lacrosse Media All-Americans, which includes 24 Big Ten players. All-Americans are selected by a collection of more than a dozen voters who also vote in the weekly Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.

Maryland led all Big Ten schools with six players awarded honors. Ohio State (5), Rutgers (4), Penn State (4), Johns Hopkins (3), Michigan (2) rounded out the honors for the Big Ten.

Maryland’s Will Schaller, and Ohio State’s Bobby Van Buren and Caleb Fyock earned First Team honors.

Schaller, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, recorded 22 caused turnovers and 27 ground balls on the season. The Terrapins also hold a league lowest 7.9 goals allowed per game. Schaller will look to lead the Terrapins to a back-to-back semifinals appearance when they square off against Georgetown on Sunday, May 18 in the quarterfinals.

Fyock was named Big Ten Specialist of the Year and Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player. He led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten regular season and tournament championship, and only allowed 8.08 goals per game, and led the league with 325 saves.

Van Buren was also an integral part of Ohio State’s historic season. The defender totaled 24 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. He led a Buckeyes defense that held opponents to single digit scoring nine games this season.

For the eighth time in eight years, the Big Ten advances at two teams to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament. Both Maryland and Penn State moved on to past the first round after strong performances.

Happy Valley, Pa. – After beating Colgate in its season opener 14-9, Penn State was able to repeat its success in the post season, beating the Raiders 13-11 on Saturday.

The game was closer than the first bout though, as the Nittany Lions found themselves down 11-10 with 5:29 remaining in the fourth period. Liam Matthews’ back-to-back goals sparked the win, and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Matt Traynor iced the game on his third goal of the game with 33 seconds remaining to win.

Penn State’s Reid Gills, who dominated Maryland in the crease in the Big Ten semifinals and went 18-22, was superb again today and found success on 21 out of 28 faceoff attempts.

The Nittany Lions will now face off against back-to-back defending national champions Notre Dame in the quarterfinals on Sunday May 18. The Fighting Irish looked the part in the opening round and beat Big Ten regular season and tournament champions Ohio State 15-6.

College Park, Md. – Behind six goals from All-Big Ten First Team member Eric Spanos, the Terrapins cruised to a 13-5 win over Air Force on Sunday.

Maryland took a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period and went on a 9-1 run in the second and third quarters. By the fourth quarter, the Terrapins had surmounted a 12-2 lead and were able to take out their starters.

In 50 minutes of action, Logan McNaney and the Maryland defense only allowed three goals on 16 shots on goal to keep the Falcons at bay.

The Terrapins will now face in-state rival Georgetown on Sunday, May 18 in the quarterfinals.

Columbus, Ohio – The 2025 Big Ten champions Ohio State were unable to repeat success and beat ACC regular season champions Notre Dame for the second time this year and fell 15-6 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

Alex Marinier tried to rally the Buckeyes with an early goal to tie the game at one apiece. But his four goals on the day weren’t enough as Tewaaraton finalist Chris Kavanaugh and the Fighting Irish jumped out to a 7-4 lead at halftime and won the second half 8-2 to escape Columbus with a 15-6 win.

Notre Dame will now face No. 5 Penn State, who did not play an ACC opponent in the regular season.

Eight From Big Ten Named USA Lacrosse All-Americans

Big Ten Specialist of the Year and Big Ten Tournament MOP Caleb Fyock from Ohio State was named First Team All-American. Maryland’s Will Schaller, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, was also named First-Team All-American. Matt Traynor, who earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year after surpassing 100 career points and 100 career goals at Penn State, was named Second Team All-American.

Three Big Ten Teams Chosen to NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has qualified three teams for the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Ohio State received the conference’s automatic berth while Maryland and Penn State earned at-large berths.

The NCAA field includes 18 teams with an opening round play-in game taking place on Wednesday (May 7) followed by eight, first round contests occurring Saturday and Sunday (May 10-11) on campus sites. Quarterfinals games will take place at Navy – Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. and at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. on May 17-18, with the semifinals and final slated for Gilette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. on May 24 and May 26.

No. 2 seed Maryland (11-3) will take on the winner of the first-round game between Robert Morris and Air Force at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday (May 11) at SECU Stadium in College Park, MD. The Terrapins are making their 22nd-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and 47^th appearance overall. Maryland was also the 2024 national runner-up.

Ohio State (14-2), the No. 4 seed, entertains Notre Dame (8-4), the two-time defending NCAA champions, at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday (May 10) at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. On March 9, the Buckeyes beat the then-No. 1 ranked Fighting Irish 10-9. Ohio State is making their first tournament appearance since 2022 and seventh overall after a historic season that included the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles.

Penn State (10-4), the No. 5 seed, will host Colgate (10-7), the Patriot League Tournament champion, at 5 ET on Saturday (May 10) at Panzer Stadium in Happy Valley, Pa. This is the Nittany Lions third-straight tournament appearance and eighth trip overall.

Penn State and Maryland will play on ESPNU while Ohio State will play on ESPN2.

Ohio State Wins First Big Ten Tournament Title

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 1 seed Ohio State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back en route to its first Big Ten Men's Lacrosse Tournament Title in program history, defeating the No. 2 seed Maryland Terrapins 14-10.

Maryland won the initial faceoff, but Cullen Brown forced a turnover which led to a goal by Ohio State’s Matthew Gannon. The Buckeyes then scored four more before the Terrapins got on the board.

After two goals by Eric Spanos at 6:50 in the second quarter, Maryland tightened the gap at 8-5, but Griffin Turner scored his sixth goal of the season to close out the half and increase the Buckeyes’ lead to four.
Ohio State secured its lead to open the second half with back-to-back goals. The Buckeyes then closed out the game by never letting Maryland get within three scores. The Buckeyes led all teams with five members on the Big Ten All-Tournament team.

All-Tournament performer Garrett Haas led all scorers with three goals, and four additional Buckeyes added a pair of goals in a well-rounded effort. Goalie Caleb Fyock made countless crucial saves to stave off any potential comeback from the Terrapins to earn the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He finished with 19 saves on the night.

The Big Ten will find out how many of its teams qualify for the postseason when the NCAA Selection Show airs Sunday evening at 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Ohio State and Maryland Advance to Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Championship

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ohio State and Maryland won their respective Big Ten Tournament semifinal games Thursday afternoon to advance to the championship.

Ohio State (13-2) bested Rutgers (7-9) 11-7 in the first semifinal matchup at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.

The No. 1 seed Buckeyes trailed 2-1 early in the first period after two consecutive goals from the No. 5 seed Scarlet Knights' Colin Kurdyla. Ohio State then responded with a 5-0 run, holding Rutgers scoreless until 12:03 in the third period. Rutgers never got within two goals the remainder of the game.

Gannon Matthews and Alex Marinier each notched a hat trick, and Big Ten Specialist of the Year Caleb Fyock totaled 14 saves on 21 shots to keep the Scarlet Knights at bay.

No. 2 seed Maryland prevailed 10-8 against No. 3 seed Penn State. The Terrapins (10-3) led 6-2 at the end of the first half, but the Nittany Lions (10-4) responded with a four-goal run to tie the game 6-6 entering the fourth quarter.

After back-and-forth goals from each team, Maryland jumped out to a 9-7 lead after two goals from Daniel Kelly with 5:18 remaining. Kelly had five goals on the day and Matthew Keegan added a hat trick for the Terrapins.

Despite the Nittany Lions 18-4 advantage in the crease on the day, the Maryland defense held strong in the final minutes to close out the win.

Ohio State and Maryland meet at 8 p.m. ET Saturday in the Big Ten Championship Game. The last time the two met in the championship game, the Terrapins prevailed 10-9 thanks to a late fourth period goal by Colin Heacock.

If Ohio State wins, it will be their first Big Ten Tournament Championship title. Maryland will look to claim its fifth and first since 2022.

Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Semifinals Shifted Due to Inclement Weather

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Big Ten Conference has announced that the semifinals of the 2025 Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Presented by DirecTV on May 1 have been rescheduled due to expected inclement weather.

As a result, both semifinals games will be pushed to earlier start times. No. 1 Ohio State vs. No. 5 Rutgers will now begin at 12:00 p.m. and No. 2 Maryland vs. No. 3 Penn State will begin 35 minutes after the end of the previous game. Each game will still be broadcast on BTN. The championship game still remains at an 8 p.m. start time on Saturday, May 3 and will be broadcast on BTN.

The 2025 Big Ten Men's Lacrosse Tournament began Saturday with Penn State and Rutgers winning quarterfinal matches. The field is now set for the semifinals next Thursday in Ann Arbor.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 5 seed Rutgers played spoiler to tournament hosts No. 4 Michigan in an 11-8 win. The Scarlet Knights (7-8) lost to the Wolverines 8-6 at home in Piscataway just two weeks ago.

The Scarlet Knights trailed 2-0 early, but forced 17 turnovers and saw eight different players score on the day in a balanced effort to come out on top. All-Big Ten First Team goalie Cardin Stoller saved eight shots on the day.

Rutgers will return to Ann Arbor for a semifinals matchup against No. 1 seed Ohio State at 5 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 3 seed Penn State fended off No. 6 Johns Hopkins in a thrilling 13-12 win to advance to the semifinals.

The Nittany Lions (10-3) went up 13-9 after Ethan Long scored his 13^th goal of the season with 6:40 remaining in the game. The Blue Jays responded with three straight goals and trailed by just one goal with 2:51, and the Penn State defense held strong behind the efforts of Will Costin and Ethan Long to secure the win.

Kyle Lehman led all scorers with four goals and also tallied an assist. Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Matt Traynor also added two goals, an assist and five groundballs in the winning effort.

Penn State will take on No. 2 seed Maryland in the semifinals for the second year in a row on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. EST inside U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Big Ten Network.

Big Ten Releases Men’s Lacrosse Post Season Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference released its individual award winners, All-Big Ten teams and Sportsmanship Award recipients for men's lacrosse on Wednesday.

Penn State’s Matt Traynor was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year and Maryland’s Will Schaller was named Defensive Player of the Year. Ohio State’s Caleb Fyock was selected as Specialist of the Year and Penn State’s Hunter Aquino was selected Freshman of the Year respectively. Nick Myers of Ohio State was a unanimous selection as Coach of the Year.

Maryland, Ohio State and Rutgers all produced a conference-high four All-Big Ten selections. Maryland and Rutgers both had three student athletes named to the All-Big Ten Freshmen team. The 10-member first, second and freshmen teams, along with the individual awards, were voted on by conference head coaches.

A senior, Traynor is the third consecutive Penn State player to win the award, following back-to-back winner TJ Malone. Traynor leads the conference with 44 points and is second in goals (30) and tied for fifth in assists (14). He is also the conference leader in goals and points in league play. Against Johns Hopkins, Traynor had a league best seven goals in a game.

Schaller, a junior, has been a focal point in the Terrapins’ defense that has allowed a league lowest 7.54 goals per game on the season and 8.30 goals per game in conference play. Schaller is a three-time Big Ten defensive player of the week and has picked up 23 ground balls and caused 19 turnovers on the season. This is the fifth consecutive Defensive Player of the Year Award for Maryland, and their seventh time winning the award overall.

Fyock earns Ohio State’s fourth Specialist of the Year Award after saving 61.1% of shots on the season and 60% of shots in conference play, both league bests. Fyock was named Big Ten Specialist of the Week twice this season, and helped lead the Buckeyes to their first ever regular season title. Fyock, along with Traynor, is a nominee for the Tewaaraton Award, given to the best player in college lacrosse.

Aquino had a breakout freshman season for the Nittany Lions and earned six Big Ten Freshmen of the Week awards. Aquino tallied 32 points on the season, good for seventh best in the Big Ten and best amongst freshmen.

Myers led Ohio State to its first-ever outright Big Ten Championship after defeating Michigan 10-8 in Ann Arbor on April 19. The Buckeyes went 4-1 during the conference campaign and are ranked fourth nationally by USILA.

The Big Ten also recognized six Sportsmanship Award honorees. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

The 2025 Big Ten Tournament begins Saturday with quarterfinal matches at Michigan and Penn State. The semifinals and championship game will be played May 1 and May 3 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Ohio State Claims Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Regular Season Title

Rosemont, Ill. – In a rivalry matchup and with the Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Regular Season Championship on the line, No. 6 Ohio State beat No. 13 Michigan in a come-from-behind 10-8 win to earn the program’s first title.

Ohio State trailed 8-6 at just 5:23 remaining in the fourth quarter but surmounted a comeback with four straight goals.

With under four minutes left, Ohio State took advantage of a Michigan turnover and Ed Shean scored the eventual game winner, putting the Buckeyes up 9-8 with 2:45 on the clock.

Caleb Fyock allowed just eight goals on 20 shots, and Gannon Matthews led the Buckeyes with three goals on five shots. Five other players scored for Ohio State in an all-around team effort.

With the win, Ohio State (12-2, 4-1 Big Ten) secured the No. 1 seed in the DirecTV Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament and earned a bye to the semifinals hosted by Michigan at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on May 3.

With the loss, Michigan falls into a three-way tie for second at 3-2 with No. 2 Maryland (10-2, 3-2) and No. 8 Penn State (9-3, 3-2). As a result of the tiebreaker, the Terrapins (head-to-head over OSU and PSU) claim the No. 2 seed. Therefore, Penn State then claims the head-to-head matchup over Michigan, securing the No. 3 seed for the Nittany Lions and No. 4 seed for the Wolverines.

Rutgers (6-8, 2-3) and Johns Hopkins (6-7, 0-5) earned the number five and number six seeds, respectively.

The tournament will open on Saturday, April 26 with two quarterfinal games, with the winners advancing to the semifinal round in Ann Arbor.

No. 3 seed Penn State welcomes No. 6 Johns Hopkins at 12 p.m. ET and No. 4 seed Michigan will host No. 5 seed Rutgers at a time yet to be determined.

Semifinal contests will begin at 5 p.m. (ET) and 7:30 p.m. (ET) on May 1 in Ann Arbor, with the championship scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3. All three contests will be broadcast live on BTN and the FOX Sports app.

The winner of this year’s Big Ten Tournament will earn the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship, with that bracket announced at 9:30 p.m. (ET) May 4 live on ESPN2.

Offensive Players of the Week
Matt Traynor, Penn State
Senior – Midfield/Attack – Downingtown, Pa. – Major: Comms Arts and Sciences

Matched a career best seven goals in a 10-4 win over Johns Hopkins
Set the new Big Ten best marks in goals scored and points this season
Also added a season-high four ground ball to round out the effort Traynor currently leads the conference in points per game (4.38)

Defensive Player of the Week
Will Schaller, Maryland
Junior – Defense – Bel Air, Md. – Major: Philosophy, Politics, and Economics

Offensive Players of the Week
Alex Marinier, Ohio State
Senior – Attack – Burlington, Ontario– Major: Finance

Tied his career high of seven points in win at No. 17 Johns Hopkins Scored six goals on eight shots and added an assist
Also added a ground ball and caused turnover to round out the effort
Marinier became the 15^th player in Ohio State school history to record 40 goals in a season

Defensive Player of the Week
Ryan Splaine, Rutgers

The 10th Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Presented by DirecTV will will feature a six-team field with the top two teams from the regular season receiving first-round byes. The quarterfinals will be played on the campus of the higher seed on Saturday, April 26. The semifinals and championship game will be played at the U-M Lacrosse Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan on May 1 and May 3, and will be hosted by the University of Michigan.

The winner of this year's Big Ten Tournament will earn the conference's automatic berth into the 2025 NCAA Championship, with the bracket to be revealed live on ESPN2 on May 4 at 8:30 p.m. (ET).
