Big Ten Announces 2025-26 Women's Golfers to Watch

ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference announced Thursday preseason honors for 54 student-athletes who were included on the Big Ten Women’s Golfers to Watch List.

The Watch List includes 11 golfers who earned All-Big Ten recognition last season, including Big Ten Golfer of the Year and Championship medalist Kiara Romero (Oregon) andNorthwestern’s Ashley Yun and Hsin Tai Lin, who each played important roles in the Wildcats’ 2025 NCAA Championship run.

2025 First Teamers Kary Hollenbaugh (Ohio State), Jasmine Koo (USC), Catherine Park (USC), SuvichayaVinjichaitham (Oregon), eight of the Top-10 finishers from the 2025 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships, and 16 student athletes who earned Academic All-Big Ten distinction last year rounded out the list.

The 2025-26 golf season teed off last week for the Big Ten, and the league placed five teams in the preseason WGCA Top-25, including four in the Top-15 (No. 2 Oregon, No. 4 USC, No. 10 Northwestern, and No. 15 Ohio State).

This spring, the Big Ten Women’s Golf Championship (April 24-26) will take place at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, California, while the 2026 NCAA Golf Championship will be hosted for a third consecutive year at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

New Era Begins As House Settlement Approved

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 6, 2025 – Today marks a historic milestone for college athletics in the United States. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has granted final approval to a settlement in the House v. NCAA (“House”) litigation. This landmark settlement – agreed to by plaintiffs representing nearly 400,000 current and former student-athletes and the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference (SEC) – will reshape the landscape of college sports, paving the way for a model that prioritizes fairness, stability, integrity and opportunity for student-athletes and institutions.

Overseeing this model will be the newly established College Sports Commission – an independent body that will be responsible for implementing the settlement terms governing revenue sharing, student-athlete Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and roster limits. The Commission will investigate any potential violations of these rules, make determinations regarding potential rules violations and penalties, provide notice and opportunity to be heard, participate in the arbitration process and ultimately administer penalties for violations of these rules. The Commission’s leadership team will be announced in the near future.

Under the new system, student-athletes will have more opportunities to financially benefit during their participation in intercollegiate athletics than ever before. Institutions are now able to share revenue directly with student-athletes, in addition to providing existing benefits such as athletic scholarships, access to world-class training facilities, academic counseling, medical care, post-eligibility medical coverage, mental health resources, nutritional guidance and life skills development.

Beginning July 1, 2025, each year, participating schools can distribute up to 22% of the average revenue among schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC from media rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships – known as the revenue sharing cap. The cap is estimated at $20.5 million per school for the 2025-26 academic year, pending final confirmation. To ensure revenue sharing with student-athletes is appropriately managed and reported to the Court for compliance, athletics departments will use the new College Athlete Payment System (CAPS) platform developed by LBi Software.

Student-athletes will also be able to continue receiving compensation from third-parties other than their institutions for the use of their NIL, so long as their NIL deals are made with the purpose of using their NIL for a valid business purpose and do not exceed a reasonable range of compensation. On behalf of the College Sports Commission, Deloitte* has built and will maintain a new technology platform called NIL Go in which student-athletes will be required to report their NIL deals to confirm they are in compliance with the rules. Deals will be evaluated based on:

Payor association – The relationship between the payor and the student-athlete’s school.
Valid business purpose – Whether the payor is seeking the use of the student-athlete’s NIL for a valid business purpose, meaning to sell a good or service to the public for profit.
Range of compensation – Whether the compensation paid to the student-athlete is commensurate with compensation paid to similarly situated individuals.

Finally, for participating schools, NCAA scholarship limits have been removed and roster limits have been established for each sport, allowing for a significant increase in scholarship opportunities for student-athletes. Under this new model, schools will have the option to offer partial or full scholarships to every student-athlete on a team’s roster, as long as the total number of student-athletes stays within the sport’s specific roster limit. Efforts have also been made to ensure current and immediately incoming student-athletes are not adversely impacted by the establishing of roster limits. Removing scholarship limits allows schools to better support their student-athletes through new scholarships, particularly in non-revenue-generating sports.

“We look forward to implementing this historic settlement designed to bring stability, integrity and competitive balance to college athletics while increasing both scholarship and revenue opportunities for student-athletes in all sports,” said Tony Petitti, Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference.

“This is a significant moment for college athletics that will provide unparalleled opportunities for student-athletes. We look forward to implementing this new system which offers much-needed transparency and structure to create a more sustainable model for the long-term future of college athletics,” said Jim Phillips, Ph.D., Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“As we enter this new era of college athletics, it is crucial we do so with structure, transparency, and the success of student-athletes in mind — this settlement and new model will ensure that happens. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to implement this new system that prioritizes fairness and opportunity for all student-athletes and institutions," said Brett Yormark, Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference.

"It's a new day in collegiate athletics. This historic moment allows us to maintain what makes college sports special, the development of young individuals through sport, while also evolving to meet today's student-athletes where they are with new opportunities in a manner that provides long-term stability for collegiate athletics. I am proud to work alongside my colleagues as we implement and introduce the future of college sports,” said Teresa Gould, Commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference.

“The approval of the House settlement agreement represents a significant milestone for the meaningful support of our student-athletes and a pivotal step toward establishing long-term sustainability for college sports, two of the Southeastern Conference’s top priorities. As the journey to modernize collegiate sports continues, we remain focused on identifying and implementing innovative opportunities for our student-athletes across all sports while maintaining the core values that make collegiate athletics uniquely meaningful,” said Greg Sankey, Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.

Following are significant dates related to the implementation of the settlement:

June 6, 2025: Settlement approved; settlement-related NCAA rules are effective, as adopted by the NCAA Division 1 Board on April 21, 2025.
June 11 2025: NIL Go portal launches.
June 15, 2025: Opt-in deadline for non-defendant schools to fully commit to revenue sharing.
July 6, 2025: Opt-in schools must “designate” student-athletes permitted by the settlement to remain above roster limits.
July 1, 2025: First date for direct institutional revenue sharing payments to student-athletes.
Start of 2025-26 academic year: With the exception of the “designated” student-athletes, Fall sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition.
December 1, 2025: With the exception of “designated” student-athletes, Winter and Spring sports must be at or below roster limits by their first day of competition or Dec. 1, whichever is earlier.

CARLSBAD, California - Northwestern claimed the 2025 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship, the first in program history, on Wednesday evening with a 3-2 victory over Stanford in the final match at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa's North Course.

The Wildcats knocked off the nation's three top-ranked teams en route to the title, taking down No. 2 Arkansas, No. 3 Oregon and No. 1 Stanford in succession in match play. The championship match came down to the final putt, by the final group, on the final hole of competition as the sun set over southern California. Northwestern junior Dianna Lee, the 2023 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, sank a par putt on No. 18 to secure a 1-Up victory over Stanford's Andrea Revuelta.

“They went out to be themselves,” said six-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, Emily Fletcher. “They went out to compete as hard as they could and that was going to be enough. Seven Big Ten Teams Take Aim At NCAA Women's Golf Title

CARLSBAD, California -- Seven Big Ten squads will tee off the 2025 NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Friday, May 16, at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa (Par 72; 6,330 yards).

No. 5 Oregon, No. 9 Southern California, No. 11 Northwestern, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 23 Michigan State, No. 28 UCLA and No. 41 Purdue all advanced from regional play, which took place May 5-7 at six sites [Charlottesville, Virginia; Columbus, Ohio; Gold Canyon, Arizona; Lexington, Kentucky; Lubbock, Texas; and Norman, Oklahoma], with the top five teams and top individual not on a qualifying team advancing to the national championships.

The event begins Friday with the first of three rounds of stroke play before the 30-team field is cut down to 15 ahead of Monday's final round of stroke play. An individual NCAA champion will be crowned following Monday's round, and the top eight teams following 72 holes will advance to NCAA match play on Tuesday. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Tuesday with the national championship match set for Wednesday, May 21.

Led by Big Ten Player of the Year, Kiara Romero, No. 5 Oregon enters the Championships this week as one of the hottest teams in the nation after posting back-to-back runaway wins at the 2025 Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Gold Canyon Regional. UO has three total wins on the season while placing in the top five in every tournament. The Ducks are making their 14th appearance at the NCAA Championships, and has advanced to match play in two of the last three years.

No. 9 USC is making its 27th consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships, led by unanimous Big Ten Freshman of the Year Jasmine Koo and Catherine Park, who picked up her ninth Top-10 finish of the season at the NCAA Lexington Regional.

Current Big Ten schools have finished runner-up at the last three NCAA Championships, and four of the last seven, with UCLA (2024), USC (2023), Oregon (2022) and Northwestern (2017) all reaching the final round of match play.

Kiara Romero Named 2025 Big Ten Women's Golfer Of The Year

ROSEMONT, Illinois – University of Oregon sophomore Kiara Romero has been named the 2025 Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Year, headlining the conference’s annual postseason honors announced Monday. USC’s Jasmine Koo was unanimously voted the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, while Ducks coach Derek Radley earned Coach of the Year honors.

Romero led the high-flying Ducks to the 2025 Big Ten Championship at Bulle Rock Golf Course earlier this month, earning medalist honors by three strokes as the only player in the field to go under-par all three days in Maryland. It was her first win of a campaign that featured four runner-up finishes, including in three-of-four tournaments heading into the conference championships. The San Jose, California, native also claimed the 2025 Mary Fossum Award with the Big Ten’s lowest adjusted scoring average (68.6) during the season. Last year’s WGCA Co-Freshman of the Year is ranked No. 3 in the nation and considered one of the top contenders for the ANNIKA Award given annually to the top female Division 1 collegiate golfer.

Koo burst onto the college golf scene with four wins during her debut season with victories at the Windy City Collegiate Classic, Stanford Intercollegiate, Juli Inkster Invitational and the stroke play portion of the prestigious East Lake Cup. Currently the No. 7 ranked player in the country, she ranked second in the Big Ten this year in average score, and third in adjusted scoring average. The Cerritos, California, native was voted the Big Ten Freshman of the Year unanimously by the conference’s 18 head coaches, and is on the ANNIKA Award Postseason Watch List.

Radley guided Oregon to the Big Ten title in their first year in the conference, tying a conference championships scoring record with a dazzling final day at Bulle Rock to win by 14 strokes. Now in his seventh season at the helm in Eugene, his lineup currently features three of the Top-6 ranked golfers in the Big Ten. The Ducks finished first or second in four of their final five events of the year heading into the NCAA postseason.

Nine different Big Ten institutions were featured on the All-Big Ten First and Second Teams, with Oregon and Northwestern leading the way with four honorees each. Additionally, each team selected a Sportsmanship Award winner who distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

13 Big Ten Schools Invited To 2025 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Eight Big Ten teams and six individuals were selected to participate in the regionals of the 2025 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships, the NCAA announced Wednesday live on the GOLF Channel. All are competing to earn a coveted spot in the national championships to be played May 16-21 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

Regional play will take place May 5-7 at six sites, all of which will have Big Ten representation, with each featuring 12 teams and six individuals for a total of 396 participants. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to the NCAA Championships where the final three days of the championships televised live by the GOLF Channel.

Big Ten champion Oregon is the No. 3 ranked team in the nation and earned the top seed at the Gold Canyon (Arizona) Regional, a field that also will feature Washington sophomore Vivian Lu.

USC is the No. 2 seed in the Lexington (Kentucky) Regional, where Indiana teammates Caroline Smith and Madison Dabagia earned individual invitations to represent the Hoosiers. Oregon Ducks Win 2025 Big Ten Women's Golf Championship

HAVRE de GRACE, Maryland -- The University of Oregon tied the 54-hole conference tournament record to win the 2025 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships at Bulle Rock Golf Course. Ducks sophomore Kiara Romero earned individual medalist honors.

Romero fired a 4-under 68 on Sunday to win individual medalist honors with a 7-under 209. The world's fifth-ranked amateur was knocking on the door all season with four runner-up finishes and claimed her first win of 2024-25 by being the only player in the 90-person field to post three rounds under-par during the weekend. The sophomore's 209 was identical to the winning score of the 2024 Big Ten Championships on the same course.

The Ducks success at Bulle Rock came from a balanced attack in which a different player led the squad each of the three days. On Sunday it was freshman Tong An who carded a bogey-free, 6-under 66, the best round of any player during the weekend. Three of the final round's six best scores were posted by Oregon, as Suvichaya Vinijchaitham carded a 3-under 69 to join Romero and An.

Oregon's 852 tied the Big Ten Championships scoring record, equaling the 54-hole mark set by Northwestern and Ohio State when they tied for the title in 2016 at The Fort in Indianapolis. Michigan State finished runner-up for the second consecutive year, followed by Illinois, Ohio State and Northwestern.

Romero claimed the title by a three-shot margin over her closest competition. Ohio State senior Kary Hollenbaugh won four of her last five events in the regular-season and continued her sizzling spring with a 5-under 67 in the final round to charge up the leaderboard and claim a share of second. Wisconsin sophomore Kate Brody had the best weekend of her college career, firing a 3-under 69 on Sunday to finish in a tie for second at 212 (-4).

Seven institutions were represented on the eight-person All-Championships roster: Oregon (2), Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State, Northwestern, USC and Illinois.

2025 NCAA Regional selections will be announced on Wednesday, April 23, with teams hoping for an invitation to one of six sites that will host competition May 5-7: Columbus, Ohio (OSU Golf Club – Scarlet Course); Charlottesville, Virginia (Birdwood Golf Course); Golf Canyon, Arizona (Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club); Lexington, Kentucky (University Club of Kentucky); Lubbock, Texas (The Rawls Course); Norman, Oklahoma (Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club).

The 2025 NCAA Championships will take place for the second consecutive year in Carlsbad, California at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa – Champions Course (May 16-21).

Spartans sophomore Ana Sofia Murcia posted the best round of the tournament so far with birdies on her final four holes en route to a 4-under 68. Senior Brooke Biermann moved atop the individual leaderboard with a near-flawless 69 that featured four birdies and just a single bogey on No. 17. After 36 holes she shares the top spot on the leaderboard with Kiara Romero, whose Oregon Ducks are in second (E), and Victoria Zheng, who has led Illinois into third-place through two rounds. Saturday play wrapped up with 17 student-athletes within three shots of the lead, and 29 within five strokes.

Sunday's final round will begin play at 8:00am ET, with the three leaders together in the final group teeing off at 10:20am ET. Parking and admission at Bulle Rock are free for spectators. Big Ten Network will air live coverage of third round competition from 1-4pm ET.

The Fighting Illini were in the first groupings off No. 1 in the morning to get the competition started, while the Ducks were in the final pairings more than two hours later, but both ended the opening round in the same spot at 2-under par. The co-leaders wrapped round one two strokes ahead of Ohio State and six shots up on fourth-place Michigan State.

Playing in the leadoff spot for No. 5 ranked Oregon, Huang birdied No. 1 and No. 2 and reached the turn at four-under on her way to a 3-under 69. Teammate Kiara Romero, the No. 5 ranked individual in women's college golf, also carded four birdies on the front-nine and signed a 1-under 71 in her Big Ten Championships debut.

Illinois entered the tournament as one of the conference's hottest teams, capping the regular-season with a win at the Boilermaker Spring Classic on the heels of back-to-back runner-up results. With a balanced attack that included three players shooting even par, they were led in round one by Victoria Zheng's 2-under 70 highlighted by an eagle on the 366-yard, Par-4 No. 9. Zheng is just one stroke off the individual lead after 18 holes, tied with USC's Catherine Park and Wisconsin's Kate Brody.

Friday was a sunny day with temperatures in the mid-60's in northeast Maryland, but winds gusting from 10-25mph added a layer of complexity to an already rigorous test. Hosting the Big Ten Women's Golf Championships for a second consecutive year, Bulle Rock welcomed the first 18-team event in conference history with pristine conditions. The club's picturesque No. 18 turned out to be the most challenging hole of the day, with the finishing hole playing more than a half-stroke over par and surrendering just four birdies while forcing 44 bogeys and ten doubles on a 90-player field that features a dozen Top-50 players.

Second round play is scheduled to begin at 8:30am ET on Saturday, April 19. Parking and admission at Bulle Rock are free for spectators all weekend. Big Ten Network will air live coverage of Sunday's final round from 1-4pm ET.

Named for the first thoroughbred racehorse brought to North America in the early 18^th century, Bulle Rock has consistently been ranked as Maryland’s No. 1 public golf course since opening in 1998. The acclaimed Pete Dye design winds through 235 acres near the intersection of the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay. Bulle Rock hosted five consecutive LPGA Championships (now known as the Women’s PGA Championship) from 2005-09, including Annika Sorenstam’s third consecutive victory in 2005 by three strokes over 15-year old amateur Michelle Wie.

The University of Indiana won its seventh conference title and first since 1998 at the 2024 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships hosted by Bulle Rocke in Havre De Grace. The Hoosiers (288-285-283=856 [-8]) edged runner-up Michigan State by a single stroke to claim the crown, led by co-individual champion Caroline Craig (69-69-71=209 [-7]).Minnesota's Isabella McCauley (74-71-64=209 [-7]) and Michigan's Monet Chun (73-66-70=209 [-7]) earned co-individual champions as well.

ROSEMONT, Illinois -- The Big Ten Conference will be well represented this week in the 2025 Augusta National Women’s Amateur, held April 2-5 at Champions Retreat Golf Club and Augusta National Golf Club. Twelve current and future Big Ten student-athletes are among the elite international field of 72 amateurs who will compete over 54 holes of stroke play.

The No. 7 USC Trojans lead the way with four golfers in the field including 2024 ANWA runner-up Bailey Shoemaker, and Jasmine Koo, the world’s No, 2 ranked amateur who finished fourth last year at Augusta. A trio of Big Ten schools currently ranked in the Top-25 will send multiple golfers to the event, with No. 3 Oregon, No. 12 Northwestern and No. 25 UCLA all represented by two student-athletes.

The first 36 holes will be contested over two days on the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., April 2 and 3, 2025. The entire field will then play Augusta National for an official practice round Friday, April 4. The final round will take place at Augusta National on Saturday, April 5 and will feature the competitors who made the cut.

The Big Ten Conference Announces Inaugural “Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award” for Student-Athletes

ROSEMONT, Ill – In honor of Jackie Robinson’s core values of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence, the Big Ten Conference today announced the inaugural Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award to recognize the conference’s student-athletes who have made an exceptional impact in their local community. Before breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier, Jackie Robinson was a standout student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the school’s first four-sport letter winner, excelling in football, basketball, track and field, and baseball.

Student-athletes will be nominated based on the following criteria:

Demonstrated Impact: Significant and tangible contributions to community projects or causes, including measurable outcomes or positive changes resulting from their involvement.

Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with others, including peers, organizations, and community members, to achieve common goals and enhance community impact.

Consistency and Commitment: Ongoing and consistent participation in community service activities over an extended period of time.

Visibility and Advocacy: Efforts to raise awareness and advocate for important groups or causes, leveraging their platform to promote positive change and engage others.

"The Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community & Impact Award celebrates Jackie’s legacy of excellence in community service,” said Sonya Pankey Robinson, Jackie’s first grandchild, Director and board member of the Jackie Robinson Foundation. "We are proud to recognize 36 outstanding men and women for the incredible impact they make in their community."

“It is our privilege and great honor to bestow this award in Jackie’s name upon these deserving Big Ten student-athletes and to express our appreciation for the continuing support of the Jackie Robinson Foundation,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti.

"Our student-athletes make significant contributions through competition, academics, and community impact,” said Big Ten Senior Vice President, Community & Impact, Omar Brown. “This award allows the Big Ten to recognize these efforts in improving communities, just as we do with their other achievements. Jackie Robinson embodies this award and our goal to honor student-athletes who positively impact others."

Each Big Ten member-institution can nominate two student-athletes, one male and one female, from their respective schools. The Big Ten Conference will select two Jackie Robinson Community & Impact award winners, from the 36 nominations, who will be announced by the Big Ten Conference this spring. All remaining nominees will be recognized with individual awards for their contributions to their local communities.

The Big Ten Conference’s commitment to athletics, academics and service goes back to the conference’s founding. Coupling the academic goals set forth by leaders of the charter members of the conference with their steadfast commitment to athletics, the conference instituted the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1915, the first award to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on intercollegiate athletics. It is awarded annually by each member institution to one male and one female student of the graduating class who has attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship and athletics.

In June of 2020 the conference launched the Big Ten Equality Coalition. This group, which features student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, chancellors, presidents and other members, has a stated goal of seeking tangible ways to actively and constructively combat racism and hate around the world, while also empowering student-athletes to express their rights to free speech and peaceful protest. An important initiative resulting from conversations initiated by the coalition was the Big Ten Voter Registration Initiative.

In recent years, several delegations of conference student-athletes and administrators have traveled to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, for an immersive civil rights educational experience entitled: “Big Life Series: Selma to Montgomery.” The visit to one of the key centers of the civil rights movement was highlighted by marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to learn more about the profound impact that young people had on the civil rights movement.

Additionally, the Big Ten Conference is dedicated to making a lasting impact on the communities where its major events are held hosting sports clinics, renovating recreation centers, and giving elementary-aged children a behind-the-scenes experience with major Big Ten events. In all cases the conference focuses on creating meaningful improvements aimed at leaving each location better than it was found. Most recently, the Big Ten collaborated with the College Football Playoff Foundation, local sports organizations and local school districts to enhance spaces for teachers and children while providing additional educational and athletic opportunities for children.

As Jackie Robison famously said, “A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."

ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference announced Thursday preseason honors for 54 student-athletes who were included on the Big Ten Women’s Golfers to Watch List.

The Watch List includes seven golfers who earned All-Big Ten recognition last season, including First Teamers Kary Hollenbaugh (Ohio State), Katie Lu (Michigan State) and Lauryn Nguyen (Northwestern), as well as 2024 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Ashley Yun (Northwestern). The group also features four of the Top-6 finishers from the 2024 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships, including co-medalist Isabella McCauley (Minnesota), and 18 student-athletes who earned Academic All-Big Ten distinction last year.

The 2024-25 golf season tees off this week for the expanded Big Ten, as the conference welcomed Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington on August 2. The league placed five teams in the preseason WGCA Top-25, including four in the Top-11 (No. 2 USC, No. 3 UCLA, No. 10 Oregon, No. 11 Northwestern, No. 23 Michigan State).

This spring, the Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships (April 18-20) return to Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace, Maryland, while the 2025 NCAA Golf Championships will be hosted for a second consecutive year at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and University of Washington Officially Join Big Ten Conference

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference today officially admitted the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington, bringing the total number of member institutions to 18. Competition will begin this season for all conference sports.

“We are excited today to officially welcome the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington to the Big Ten Conference,” said Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “All four institutions feature a combination of world class academics and athletics that are a great fit for our conference, and we look forward to building long-lasting relationships with the administrators, coaches, student-athletes, alumni and fans.”

On June 30, 2022, the Big Ten’s Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) voted unanimously to admit the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC). A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.

Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. Today, they also become members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where Big Ten institutions lead the nation with more than 75,000 instructional staff, 810,000 students, $17.4 billion in annual research expenditures, and 145 million library volumes, representing 25 percent of all print titles in North America. Collaboration through the Big Ten Academic Alliance allows the universities to work more effectively and efficiently by, among other things, sharing a high-speed fiber optic network, offering an array of leadership development programs, building shared infrastructure, and seamlessly sharing library resources.

Athletically, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington have won a combined 302 NCAA team championships and have 49 Olympians on Team USA at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. On the football field, they’ve combined for 10 Heisman Trophies, 73 College Football Hall of Famers, 41 Rose Bowl championships and 173 First Round NFL draft picks, including six this year.

The University of Oregon is a Carnegie R1 research university and a member of the Association of American Universities. The Oregon faculty includes a Nobel Prize winner, a MacArthur fellow, a pair of National Medal of Science winners and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. Oregon has more than 500 student-athletes competing in 20 sports and have taken home 38 national championships, including men’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, acrobatics and tumbling.

UCLA has been ranked the nation’s No. 1 public university for seven years in a row by U.S. News & World Report and is known worldwide for the breadth and quality of its academic, research, health care, cultural, continuing education and athletics programs. UCLA is the most applied-to university in the country. UCLA Athletics has more than 700 student-athletes competing in 25 sports and has won 123 NCAA national championships, the second most in the country.

University of Southern California (USC) is a prestigious private research university offering more than 350-degree programs excelling in education, the arts, business, engineering and sciences, as well as in research innovation and healthcare. Sponsoring 23 sports, USC has a long tradition of successful Olympic athletes, boasting more Olympians, medalists and gold medalists than any school in the country. Entering 2024-25, the Trojan teams have won 113 national championships.

The University of Washington has been recognized as the No. 1 most innovative public university in the world and recently tied for seventh on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities rankings and second among U.S. public institutions. Washington receives more federal research dollars than any other U.S. public university and has been home to seven Nobel Prize winners. In athletics, the Huskies 650 student-athletes compete in 22 sports and have won national championships in football, women’s cross country, men’s rowing, women’s rowing, softball, women’s volleyball and women’s golf. The department annually finishes among the top schools in the nation in the NACDA Director’s Cup.

Big Ten Conference Announces 2024 Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Wednesday, recognizing two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten member institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program. These honorees will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements.

This year’s recipients, who represent 15 different sports, will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines. Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarships. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average (GPA), demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.

The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student’s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. To retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.

Big Ten Announces Distinguished Scholar Award Recipients

2023-24 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that 1,695 students on varsity rosters have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes students from all 14 institutions plus Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame and 38 different sports who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.

The 2023-24 class of Distinguished Scholar Award recipients includes 386 students who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the previous academic term.

Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must have earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.

2023-24 Outstanding Sportsmanship Award Winners Announced

2023-24 SPORTSMANSHIP HONOREES

ROSEMONT, Ill. – On Tuesday, the Big Ten Conference announced the 28 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2023-24 academic year. These standouts were chosen from a group of 350 students honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

NCAA and Autonomy Conferences Agree on Settlement

Today, the NCAA and the five autonomy conferences released a joint statement on the agreement of settlement terms.

“The five autonomy conferences and the NCAA agreeing to settlement terms is an important step in the continuing reform of college sports that will provide benefits to student-athletes and provide clarity in college athletics across all divisions for years to come. This settlement is also a roadmap for college sports leaders and Congress to ensure this uniquely American institution can continue to provide unmatched opportunity for millions of students. All of Division I made today’s progress possible, and we all have work to do to implement the terms of the agreement as the legal process continues. Chun, Yun, Fletcher Headline 2024 Big Ten Women’s Golf Awards

ROSEMONT, Illinois – Michigan senior Monet Chun has been named the 2024 Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Year, as voted on by the conference’s coaches. Northwestern newcomer Ashley Yun earned Freshman of the Year honors, while Wildcats head coach Emily Fletcher was voted Coach of the Year.

A native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Chun earned co-medalist honors at the 2024 Big Ten Championships and Bulle Rock Golf Course and also won the Chattanooga Classic in April. Last week she was recognized as the conference’s Mary Fossum Award winner, given annually to the student-athlete with the lowest adjusted stroke average (69.8) for the season. She also was a unanimous selection to the 2024 All-Big Ten First Team, the fourth All-Conference recognition of her career. She is Michigan’s second Golfer of the Year, following in the footsteps of 2002 honoree, Ashley Lau. Chun and the Wolverines will tee off the NCAA Auburn Regional on May 6.

Yun was a unanimous selection as the 2024 Big Ten Freshman of the Year after a season in which her adjusted stroke average was nearly 1.5 shots better than her closest conference competitor in the rookie class. She got stronger as her debut season went along, finishing Top-3 at the PING/ASU Invitational in March and earning a Top-10 result at the Big Ten Championships. The West Covina, California, native is Northwestern’s third consecutive Big Ten Freshman of the Year (Dianna Lee [’23], Lauryn Nguyen [‘22]), fourth in the last five seasons, and seventh in the last ten years. Yun is the only freshman representative on the 2024 All-Big Ten Teams, earning a Second Team nod.

Emily Fletcher is the Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second straight year and the sixth time in her career (2023, ’16, ’15, ’13, ’11). She guided the Wildcats to a Top-10 national ranking while playing one of the most competitive schedules in college golf. The Wildcats went 22-5-1 against Top-10 competition this season, and 55-9-1 against opponents ranked in the Top-25. They won titles at the PING/ASU Invitational and Silverado Showdown during the spring, finished runner-up at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, and third at the Big Ten Championships. Fletcher, Yun and Northwestern will be the No. 2 seed in the NCAA East Lansing Regional teeing off on May 6.

Chun was one of five unanimous selections to the eight-member All-Big Ten First Team, along with Northwestern’s Lauryn Nguyen, Ohio State’s Kary Hollenbaugh, Illinois’ Isabel Sy and Michigan State’s Katie Lu. They are joined on the First Team by Ohio State’s Caley McGinty, Northwestern’s Jennifer Cai and Maryland’s Patricie Mackova.

The Second Team includes Big Ten Championships co-medalist Isabella McCauley from Minnesota, Michigan’s Hailey Borja, Nebraska’s Kelli Ann Strand, Maryland’s Nicha Kanpai, Purdue’s Ashley Kozlowski and Momo Sugiyama, and Yun and Jieni Li representing Northwestern.

The Big Ten also recognized 14 Sportsmanship Award recipients, honoring golfers who distinguished themselves though sportsmanship, ethical behavior, academics and citizenship.

The Big Ten Conference will be represented by seven teams and three individual competitors during NCAA Women’s Golf Regional play, beginning May 6. Northwestern is the No. 2 seed in the East Lansing (MI) Regional, which also features the host No. 5 Spartans, No. 9 Indiana and top-seeded individual Isabel Sy from Illinois. Michigan is the No. 6 seed in the Auburn (AL) Regional, where they’ll be joined by No. 2 individual Isabella McCauley from Minnesota. Ohio State earned the No. 6 seed in the Bryan (TX) Regional, along with No. 7 Maryland. Purdue is the No. 6 seed in the Las Vegas Regional, while Nebraska’s Kelli Ann Strand is the No. 3 individual in the Cle Elum (WA) Regional.

Regional play will take place May 6-8 at six regional sites, with 396 participants and each site featuring 12 teams and six individuals. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to compete in the national championships to be played May 17-22 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. Championship play will be hosted by University of Texas at Austin, with the final three days of the championships televised live by the GOLF Channel.

Indiana Wins Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. – The 42nd Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships, presented by Old National Bank, came down to the wire as Indiana made a late surge with just a few holes to play to overtake Michigan State on Sunday at the Bulle Rock Golf Course. Indiana receives the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championships after winning its eighth Big Ten title and first in 26 years.

With temperatures in the low 50s, the Hoosiers closed the day shooting 283 to finish at 856 (-8), edging out Michigan State (857) by a stroke and Northwestern (863) by seven shots. Purdue and Michigan tied for fourth (864), followed by Ohio State (872), Maryland (873), Wisconsin (882), Minnesota (884), Nebraska (893), Rutgers (898), Illinois (898), Penn State (902) and Iowa (902).

The final day of action saw three players earn co-medalist honors, the first time this has happened in the event’s history. Minnesota’s Isabella McCauley, Michigan’s Monet Chun and Indiana’s Caroline Craig all finished with a three-day total of 7-under par 209.

This year’s event begins a two-year run for the championships at Bulle Rock Golf Course. The course, designed by Pete Dye, is named for the first thoroughbred racehorse brought to North America in the early 18th century. Bulle Rock has consistently been ranked as Maryland’s No. 1 public golf course since opening in 1998.

More women’s golf is on the way as teams hope to hear their names called during the NCAA Selection Show on Wednesday, April 24 at 2 p.m. ET on Golf Channel. Regionals are set to take place at six sites from May 6-8, followed by the championship finals May 17-22 in Carlsbad, Calif.

Named for the first thoroughbred racehorse brought to North America in the early 18^th century, Bulle Rock has consistently been ranked as Maryland’s No. 1 public golf course since opening in 1998. The acclaimed Pete Dye design winds through 235 acres near the intersection of the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay. Bulle Rock hosted five consecutive LPGA Championships (now known as the Women’s PGA Championship) from 2005-09, including Annika Sorenstam’s third consecutive victory in 2005 by three strokes over 15-year old amateur Michelle Wie.

The University of Illinois won its first conference title last year at the 2023 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships hosted by Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh. The Illini (286-292-287=865 [+13]) edged runner-up Northwestern by three strokes to claim the crown, led by individual medalist Crystal Wang (71-68-62=201 [-12]). The 2023 Golfer of the Year and Mary Fossum Award winner posted the best single- and three-round scores in Championships history on her way to a 12-stroke victory.

REWIND: Illinois Captures Top Honors At 2023 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships

No. 9 Northwestern is the top-ranked team in the conference heading into the event, with consecutive wins at the PING/ASU Invitational and Silverado Showdown, and a runner-up result at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in its last three events. The Wildcats are followed in this week's rankings by No. 30 Ohio State (coming off a decisive victory over a field that included 11 Big Ten programs at the Therese Hession Buckeye Invite) No. 32 Michigan State, No. 33 Purdue, No. 37 Michigan and No. 41 Maryland.

The Wolverines boast the conference's top-ranked individual in No. 27 Monet Chun. The senior from Richmond Hills, Ontario, won the Chattanooga Classic earlier this month and was the medalist at the 2022 Big Ten Championships where she led Michigan to its first league crown. The University of Illinois won its first conference title last year at the 2023 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships hosted by Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh. The Illini (286-292-287=865 [+13]) edged runner-up Northwestern by three strokes to claim the crown, led by individual medalist Crystal Wang (71-68-62=201 [-12]). The 2023 Golfer of the Year and Mary Fossum Award winner posted the best single- and three-round scores in Championships history on her way to a 12-stroke victory.

The last four Big Ten Women’s Golf Championships have produced four different team champions as the quality of competition across the league has surged. Seven Big Ten teams and three individuals represented the conference with earned invitations to the 2023 NCAA Regionals. Bulle Rock will host not just the 2024 Championships, but also the 2025 edition of the event that will feature 18 conference schools for the first time. Women's Golf Postseason Central

NCAA Format:

The NCAA selects 72 teams that are grouped into six regionals. The top five teams and top individual (from a non-qualifying team) from each regional advance to the NCAA Championship.

At the Championship, 30 teams compete in three rounds of stroke play. After the third round, the field is cut to 15 teams for the fourth round, at which time an individual champion is crowned. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play move on to match play to determine a team champion.
