Michigan Captures Big Ten Men’s Tennis Award

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference will send 15 players to the 2024-25 NCAA Division I Men’s Singles and Doubles Tennis Championships, to be held Nov. 19-24 at the Hurd Tennis Center and hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The NCAA Individual Championships are moving to the fall for the first time as part of a two-year pilot program. The team championship will continue to take place in the spring.Brackets for the 64-player singles and 32-team doubles tournaments will be revealed on Saturday, Nov. 16.In singles, the Big Ten will have eight players represented from six schools. Ohio State’s Aidan Kim is seeded eighth and Michigan State’s Ozan Baris enters the tournament as the nation’s top-ranked player (according to the ITA preseason rankings). Baris and Michigan’s Gavin Young will be appearing in their third NCAA singles tournament. Three additional Big Ten players are listed as alternates for the event.The doubles competition will feature four Big Ten teams. Gavin Young will pull double duty after qualifying for his third NCAA doubles tournament. UCLA’s Alexander Hoogmartens will make his second NCAA appearance and is unbeaten this season with doubles partner Aadarsh Tripathi.Ohio State has won the last two NCAA doubles titles. Robert Cash and senior JJ Tracy claimed the title last spring while Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter won in 2023. Three Big Ten teams are in action this week as the 2024-25 campaign brings changes to the collegiate tennis scene. Traditionally, fall tennis has allowed student-athletes the opportunity to sharpen their games (and in some cases earn professional tour points) without the pressure of team competition. Fall tennis takes on added importance this year as the NCAA institutes a two-year pilot program to conduct its national championships in singles and doubles in November. The NCAA team championship will still be contested in May. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has also added two qualifying tournaments to its calendar — Sectional Championships and the Conference Masters Championships. For the Big Ten, Oregon, USC, UCLA and Washington join the fold, raising conference membership in the sport to 14 teams. The Big Ten is well represented in the ITA Preseason Rankings, with four players in the Top 10 for singles, led by No. 1 Ozan Baris of Michigan State. Teammate Aristotelis Thanos will be representing Greece at Davis Cup this weekend. Men's Tennis Teams Begin 2024-25 Seasons

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference today officially admitted the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington, bringing the total number of member institutions to 18. Competition will begin this season for all conference sports.“We are excited today to officially welcome the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington to the Big Ten Conference,” said Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “All four institutions feature a combination of world class academics and athletics that are a great fit for our conference, and we look forward to building long-lasting relationships with the administrators, coaches, student-athletes, alumni and fans.”On June 30, 2022, the Big Ten’s Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) voted unanimously to admit the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC). A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. Today, they also become members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where Big Ten institutions lead the nation with more than 75,000 instructional staff, 810,000 students, $17.4 billion in annual research expenditures, and 145 million library volumes, representing 25 percent of all print titles in North America. University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and University of Washington Officially Join Big Ten Conference

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Wednesday, recognizing two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten member institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program. These honorees will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements. This year’s recipients, who represent 15 different sports, will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines. Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarships. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average (GPA), demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program. The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student’s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. To retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection. Big Ten Recognizes Spring Academic All-Big Ten Honorees

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has recognized seven men's tennis players from the Big Ten Conference with All-American accolades. Earning All-American honors in singles were: Karlis Ozolins, Illinois; Ozan Barris, Michigan State; Jack Anthrop, Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy, Ohio State. In doubles, All-American status was bestowed upon Ohio State's Robert Cash/JJ Tracy and Illinois' Karlis Ozolins/Hunter Heck. The ITA grants All-America honors for singles based on 1.) a top 16 seed into the NCAA Singles Championship or 2.) advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship, or 3.) finishing in the top 20 of the final&nbsp;ITA Singles Rankings. For doubles, All-America recognition is awarded for teams that either 1.) earn a top-eight seed into the NCAA Championship or 2.) reach the NCAA Championship quarterfinals or 3.) finish in the top 10 in the final&nbsp;ITA National Doubles Rankings. The ITA also recently released its final singles, doubles and team rankings for the season.
